New Delhi: India and Singapore have carried out a major naval wargame in the southern fringes of the South China Sea over the last three days, in reflection of their growing congruence of interests in the strategically key region. The Indian Navy deployed its guided-missile destroyer INS Ranvijay, anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kiltan and guided-missile corvette INS Kora and one P8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft for the ''SIMBEX'' exercise from September 2-4, officials said. The Singapore Navy was represented by formidable class frigate RSS Steadfast, victory class missile corvette RSS Vigour, one Archer class submarine and one Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircraft, they said. Four F-16 fighter aircraft of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) also participated in the exercise during the air defence drills. It was the 28th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX). 28th Ed of Initiated in 1994, SIMBEX is the Indian Navy's longest uninterrupted bilateral maritime exercise with any foreign navy. India, Singapore Begin SIMBEX 2019 Naval Exercises in South China Sea – The Diplomat

The Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy began a major bilateral naval exercise on Sunday in the South China Sea. The exercise, code-named SIMBEX 19, will run through May 22. Last year’s exercises took place in the Indian Ocean, off India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On the Indian side, two vessels that have been on a two-month-long deployment to East Asia are participating. INS Kolkata, the lead ship of the Kolkata-class guided missile destroyers, and INS Shakti, a Deepak-class fleet tanker, participated in the exercise. Singapore, meanwhile, was represented by RSN Steadfast, a Formidable-class frigate, and RSN Valiant, a Victory-class corvette. Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircraft and Republic of Singapore Air Force F-16 fighters also participated. This year’s exercise will include a live-fire sea phase exercise, which will encompass a range of maritime combat drills, including “firing on aerial/surface targets, advanced aerial tracking, coordinated targeting exercises and tactical exercises on surface/air scenarios,” according to a statement released by the Indian Navy. The three-day exercise, which took place off the southern coast of the South China Sea and was hosted by the RSN, was the 28th bilateral naval exercise between Singapore and India (SIMBEX). Republic of Singapore, Indian navies complete SIMBEX exercise

The RSN participated in the exercise with two Formidable-class frigates RSS Intrepid and RSS Steadfast (embarked with an S-70B naval helicopter), and the Endurance-class landing ship tank RSS Endeavour. The IN participated with the Rajput-class destroyer INS Rana (embarked with a Chetak helicopter), Kamorta-class corvette INS Kamorta, Kora-class corvette INS Karmuk, Sindhughosh-class submarine INS Sindhuraj, and a P8I maritime patrol aircraft. During the exercise, the two navies executed gunnery firings, manoeuvring drills, communication exercises and advanced naval warfare serials, including anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare drills. Commenting on the successful completion of the exercise, Commanding Officer of RSS Intrepid, Lieutenant Colonel Oh Zongbo said, “ Despite not being able to meet face-to-face, we continued to drill in a wide range of naval warfare serials, such as anti-submarine operations that require close coordination between ships, helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. The ability to execute these complex drills is a result of the good understanding and coordination that our navies have established over the years.“ SIMBEX was incepted in 1994 and is one of the RSN’s longest-running bilateral exercises.
