Black Bastion House

The body of the build is basically two black bastions of dark local granite stone, with an airy pavilion like double height living space, cradled in between. Stone – The local granite is highly sustainable due to its direct use from quarry to site application, lowered maintenance costs over the years, sheer endurance against elements & performance as a thermally stable material. Historically, Stone buildings are evidently performing better than buildings in other materials. Generous, room sizes and heights give the home an understated elegance. The focus being the back garden which the sort of U- shaped plan conjures. The bathrooms are all in White Indian marble…. sized as lovely large rooms. The windows are all custom made out of metal with bespoke brass hardware, the doors are made of salvaged wood in elegant proportions and polished oils. This, home seeks to create a refined understated elegant atmosphere for the family. AD100 2023: Spasm Design Architects

Ketan Mehta Project in Focus: A multigenerational home in Ahmedabad (pictured) built on 2.5 acres of land, this house was designed in a way that would urge members of the family across age groups to live close to nature and with each other. It is a three level home with a body that sinks in, sits on and floats over the surrounding greens. The intent was to deliver a truly contemporary modern home fully built in Indian stones, woods, plasters, metals, and other indigenous materials. Recent Projects: An office crafted from Indian materials, with giant scaffolding and bent metal bridges, which, when viewed from a distance, appear like a Piranesi artwork; a house in Ahmedabad with roof gardens, sunken courts, a ventilated façade, pergolas, and jalis that temper heat. Dream Collaboration: Objects in stone with Spanish designer Manuel Bañó.

Dramatic House Cast in Liquid Stone by SPASM Design Architects

Architecture Nestled on a cliffside in Khopoli, There are conflicting feelings, both visually and emotionally, as one approaches the structure. On one hand, its saturated black matte-ness gives a sense of weight to the viewer; on the other, standing by the poolside at the end of the open terrace confronted with views of the surrounding greenery provides a sense of release. Built to withstand the forces of nature without depriving its inhabitants of the comforts of light, space and views, House Cast in Liquid Stone is a dramatic home without even trying, its steadfast and no-frills presence the most impressive feature of it all. Spasm Design Architects, Mumbai

Spasm Design Architects is a Mumbai-based firm that was founded by Ar. Sangeeta Merchant and Ar. Sanjeev Panjabi in 1995. They believe that all designs should be transformative. They should have the ability to hold that transformative power to change us as humans. Spasm Design Architects have worked on several residential and mixed-use projects in India and Tanzania. Each project tells a story and tends to represent 1. The House Cast in Liquid Stone | Spasm Design Architects This second house is located in the Khopoli region of Maharashtra. The project gets its name from the material that has been used which is basalt. Basalt is the local rock of the region of Khopoli. It has been used in various ways depending on the space and use. The house was meant to be built to converse with the surrounding nature, converse with the cliff it is situated on, and act as an escape from the harsh climate the site offers during the hot months. Parikrama House / SPASM Design Architects

#RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS Parikrama House / SPASM Design Architects Approached by a friend who represents a Minimal-window producer from Portugal, called PANORAMAH, we were given the task of developing a sort of case study home, in the Murud region amidst a coconut grove. The windows being super high-tech and modern in their presence were meant to disappear against the verdant view. The plan evolved like a two headed worm, with the sleeping spaces in series and the higher main living and dining spaces flanking opposite ends of the series. The idea being, the tracing of a PARIKRAMA, a circum-ambulatory path, while moving from spaces, always in contact with the outside. The entire construction was planned in TILT- UP STONE slabs, hence allowing the minimal windows into cavity walls, Granite 40 millimeters. Thick was the material of choice. STONE, has a sense of time built into it, like the GRANDFATHER of building materials. It is also a highly sustainable material to build with due to the least number of processes on it, from quarry to site. Conceived as a super modern yet ancient vessel this construct, is a simple assemblage of giant panels of glass against huge Stone slabs. A Primitive sense of dwelling pervades, as the day turns into a starry night sky and the light pours out of the glass making the stone invisible, A REVERSAL of what one perceives in the day…. Once all else decays the Stones will still stand…..
