Sri Aurobindo Ashram (Pondicherry)

An absolute must when in Puducherry! The greenery and the meditation hall are magneficient. Book for the meditation hall in advance as it is impossible to get same day entry. A great place for family outing. Be prepared for long walks. Carry a hat and enjoy the ambience. Good restaurant available and the ashrams produce is available from the shop. The Ashram is a place for quiet reflection with the enormous "Service Tree" providing shade over the white marble Samadhi (tomb) of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The top of the tomb is adorned with decoratively arranged flower petals, and there are also many plants and fragrant flowers in bloom around the tomb. When planning your visit, please remember mobile phones MUST be turned off, there no photos are allowed, shoes cannot be worn inside, and you must remain silent. It is a truly peaceful and tranquil place, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Pondicherry located just outside the Ashram's walls. If you are into meditation, this may be your place! They are also strict to ensure that mobile phones are off before entering, so you get to have your private space without tourists clicking shots around you. Only a small section is allowed for tourists so I finished it quite fast as I would like to see other sites in Pondicherry too. The Aurobindo Ashram needn't much intro. A peaceful and calm place where you can sit and do meditation. Entry is free but one condition Mobile phone should be switch off and shoe will be removed...

Counting the 400 students of the Centre of Education and the hundreds of devotees who live close to the Ashram, the larger community consists of more than 2500 people. Golconde Pondicherry

This is the first reinforced-concrete structure in India, predating Chandigarh’s and Ahmedabad’s modern architecture. Golconde in Pondicherry was completed in 1945. It was built as a dormitory for members—ashramites, as they are called—of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. It might be easily overlooked from the street, but walk through the singular discreet wooden door with a lotus engraving on it, and it stands tall as if in silent contemplation. This modernist beauty, the first reinforced-concrete structure in India, predating Chandigarh’s and Ahmedabad’s modern architecture, was designed by American architect Antonin Raymond and later completed by George Nakashima, who also became a member of the ashram. Nakashima’s fine wood furniture is in use throughout the rooms. For our craftsmanship issue, AD invites Pankaj Vir Gupta and Christine Mueller to share a few pages out of their monograph on Golconde. The AD100 architects have authored ‘Golconde: The Introduction of Modernism in India’, an in-depth study of the building, the second edition of which releases this September. In this portfolio, the architects share gorgeous details, archival images and an essay recalling their discovery of this modernist icon. By Pankaj Vir Gupta and Christine Mueller | It was on a sweltering, humid June afternoon that we disembarked from our bus outside the Seaside Guest House in Pondicherry. Our journey from the Chennai airport to the sand-scrubbed majestic forms of the Shore temple at Mahabalipur...

Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry : Know more

There was no Ashram at first, only a few people came to live near Sri Aurobindo and practice Yoga. It was only sometime after the Mother came from Japan that it took the form of the Ashram, more from the wish of the sadhaks who desired to entrust their whole inner and outer life to the Mother than from any intention or plan of hers or of Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo [In 1926] Sri Aurobindo had given me charge of the outer work because he wanted to withdraw into concentration in order to hasten the manifestation of the Supramental consciousness and he had announced to the few people who were there that he was entrusting to me the work of helping and guiding them, that I would remain in contact with him, naturally, and that through me he would do the work. The Mother The Ashram itself has been created with another object than that ordinarily common to such institutions, not for the renunciation of the world but as a centre and a field of practice for the evolution of another kind and form of life which would in the final end be moved by a higher spiritual consciousness and embody a greater life of the spirit. Sri Aurobindo Rules in the Life of the Ashram There has never been, at any time, a mental plan, a fixed programme or an organisation decided beforehand. The whole thing has taken birth, grown and developed as a living being by a movement of consciousness (Chit-tapas) constantly maintained, increased and fortified. Work in the Ashram Karma is a much simpler road—provided...
