The rise from that controversy at Newlands in 2018 was near-miraculous: Smith returned to Test cricket with a 774-run Ashes series in 2019, and pictures of him in tears at Sydney airport after his return in disgrace from South Africa were replaced in the popular memory with those of triumphant celebrations of centuries. Part of his punishment for Cape Town was being banned from any leadership position for two years, but once he served that penance, in late 2021 he was named Pat Cummins' vice-captain and a few weeks later led the side against England when Cummins was ruled out of a Test by Covid. Smith began his Test career in 2010 as a legspinner who batted at No. 8; by the time he was named Australia's captain five years later, he was the No. 1 Test batter in the world and no more than a...

And now, almost three months later, Young returned the favor. From rookie minicamp to organized team activities, the franchise’s all-time leading receiver was a regular visitor at team practices this spring. When asked about Smith Sr.’s presence this week, Young expressed his gratitude for the future Hall of Famer’s time and advice. “He’s been here a good amount,” he replied. “And having someone—a legend—being able to be around every time, every opportunity I get to be able to pick his brain, hear his opinions about stuff, tell me how he feels—whether that’s stuff about me and super applicable or just other stuff. Whatever conversations we have, I definitely value those a lot. I’m grateful for him being here. A legend of the sport. And for him to come here—it’s not his first time he comes in—and he’s supportive, he’s doing everything to push us and giving his opinion and that’s something we all value being the legend that he is.” That legend, as we mentioned, already had some flattering words about the...

Steve Smith, former Raiders fullback, dead at 57 after near 20

SEAHAWKS' DK METCALF ADMITS HE'S 'GOT TO GROW UP' AFTER RECENT EJECTION "The Raiders Family is deeply saddened by the passing of Steve Smith, who valiantly battled Lou Gehrig's Disease for two decades. Steve and his wife Chie are an inspiration, smiling every day while always working for a cure for ALS," the team said. "The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with Chie, their children Dante and Jazmin, and their grandson Little Steve." NEW! "Time Flies" + Companion CD Signed by Steve Smith (and streaming links)! Vital Information is back! Celebrationg the band's 40th Anniversary, the band has released it's new CD "Time Flies" with a companion CD "A Prayer For The Generations." Released as a two CD set signed by Steve Smith, you can order here! Or, you can stream "Time Flies" on most major streaming platforms. Click here for links! “Emergence” kicks off TIME FLIES with a powerful and intricate composition by keyboard player Manuel Valera, a Grammy nominated artist and Guggenheim Fellow. Steve Smith’s drum performance invokes the spirit of Tony Williams during his “Believe It” period. Bud Powell’s “Tempus Fugue-It” requires a high degree of technical facility to play the up-tempo piece in a relaxed, swinging way and the new incarnation of Vital Information has the chops to play this classic with ease. “Time Flies” is an improvised groove piece featuring saxophone guru George Garzone. Manuel Valera’s sophisticated reworking of “Darn That Dream” is a showcase for the brush mastery of the Vital Information bandleader. Another inventive arrangement by Valera, “Un Poco Loco,” uses the rhythm of the cowbell beat Max Roach played on the original recording, applied to the melody, to breathe new life into this Bud Powell masterpiece. Steve Smith performed Mike Mainieri’s “Self Portrait” many times as a member of Steps Ahead; after a breathtakingly beautiful piano intro by Valera, the group has their own interpretat...

Beware, England: Steve Smith looks like a batting immortal again

Read more It was striking how much Smith’s hundred at the Oval resembled those from his last visit to England. There was the same bloodymindedness, a fully embodied determination that he was not going to accept anything less from his time in the middle. There was that scoring strike rate that spent most of the first day in the 30s before finally nudging up to 41. There were the 19 boundaries, only half a dozen of which went through the off-side between mid-off and point. Above all, there was a return to the technique that worked so well last time. During the interim, Smith had taken guard more centrally in front of the stumps and stayed more still at the crease while waiting for the bowler to arrive. It worked for him in Sri Lanka in 2022, with his unbeaten 145 in Galle. That innings felt significant. For a six-year span between 2013 and 2019, he made 26 hundreds. After Manchester 2019, it was one century in nearly three years, a pandemic notwithstanding. Then came Galle, and soon afterwards a century against South Africa and a double against West Indies. For those last three Smith used the new technique, where he tried to stay more side-on to the ball and not to move. Part of his explanation was that it kept his body to the leg-side of the ball, opening up the off-side so he could score more aggressively through cover. Especially against the generally faster pace of South Africa, that helped his scoring options. And with less movement off the surface in Australia, it was ...
