SMA Article: Journey of the Tanpura

Journey of the Tanpura For a student it takes time to procure a good Tanpura and more importantly tune the instrument perfectly in order to practice. For children this may be a difficult task to perform. Hence the electronic Tanpura was innovated by Radel Electronics. Though the reception to this instrument was slow initially, the idea picked up among the students who travelled for work or studies. They found it as an easy replacement to carry around. Practice could be done anywhere, anytime! In this era of Smartphones and apps, the idea of electronic Tanpura took no time to upgrade into the app. These apps are auto tuned, hence demand no skill from the student. Students only need to choose the right key and they can find a perfectly tuned Tanpura playing for their practice. The Tanpura is in one’s pocket and using earphones and playing it to oneself could be a good option to practice sometimes. Though apps cannot replace the feel of the original Tanpura, the apps are used at concerts and sometimes in order to maintain an accurate reference even to the real Tanpura. Real instruments are often affected by weather and strong lights, but the apps perform accurately. Tanpura Playing Technique • Be seated in a cross legged posture on a mat. • Place the Tanpura on your lap • Rest your right arm in parallel to the stem of the Tanpura. Thumb rests on the stem. Your fingers need to be almost parallel to the strings. • Strum using the left edge of your fingers. For Pancham, use midd...

Electronic options are no match to the traditional tanpura

At a time when the acoustic tanpura is bidding a quiet adieu to the classical concert stage, a book Acoustical Analysis of the Tanpura, Indian Plucked String Instrument written by a team of physicists, Asoke Kumar Datta, Ranjan Sengupta, Kaushik Banerjee and Dipak Ghosh (published by Springer, Singapore), shows how we are letting some significant features of our tradition fade away. The book not only reaffirmed my faith in the tanpura, but prompted me to relook at the instrument’s history and its place in the music world. My love affair with the tanpura, spanning over six decades, began the day my Master saab, pleased with a four-year-old student’s melodic memory, brought his own tamburi (a small tanpura) and placed it in my lap. While doing so, he also narrated the legend of how Tumburu, a leader of the Gandharvas, with the blessings of Lord Siva, created the tumbura or tanpura. According to history, the tanpura owes its origin to an instrument that came here from the Balkan region. It is also said that Indian folk instruments like tamburi, tuntuni and gopi-yantra are the precursors of the tambura, which derived its name from a gourd called tumba. The resonator of the tanpura is referred to as tumba and it is made of gourd shell in North India. In the South, it is carved out of wood. It came to be known as tanpura simply because it is capable of generating pure harmonics, unhampered by chikaris or supporting strings, as in a sitar, for a longer period than any other strin...

Replace nylon trimmer string with steel wire/ good idea?

Seems a good idea to me. After all, some weed wackers have steel blades and i do not like the nylon string getting all tangled up nor littering my yard with plastic. I'll get some suitable steel wire, wrap it round the head, clip to good length and have a go at the grass. Any precautionary comments welcome. I will wear eye protection. To me the wire would just bend back on itself and become useless, the nylon is flexible and set for the purpose. Don't think it will work, the blades are horrible to use at least the the flat 2 spokes not sure about the circular ones. They may be a bit less vibration and safer Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk not sure how you would fix it at the spool end? with nylon, the first rotation usually cuts it off to the correct length.with steel i agree with the above poster that it will just bend. if its going to fly off you need full body protection and no one around you. The idea of a strimmer originally was that the nylon was effective enough to cut grass but would not damage trees and would not damage your hand/foot when placed in the way. The brush cutters with steel blades are really not for domestic grass cutting though they are used extensively. My skill level with my brush cutter on the grass is such that I often have several large circles of exposed soil despite being careful....but they are lethal
