American Taylor Fritz shushes booing French Open crowd after he beats French player

PARIS (AP) — Fritz, a 25-year-old from California who is seeded No. 9 at Rinderknech attempted a lob that landed long on the last point, and Fritz, who had been running toward the baseline to chase the ball, immediately looked up into the stands and pressed his right index finger to his lips to say, essentially, "Hush!" He held that pose for a bit as he headed back toward the net for a postmatch handshake, then spread his arms wide, wind-milled them a bit as if to egg on the rowdiness, and yelled: "Come on! I want to hear it!" During the customary winner's on-court interview that followed, more jeers rained down on Fritz, and 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli kept pausing her attempts to ask a question into her microphone. So Fritz again said, "Shhhhh!" and put his finger toward his mouth, while Bartoli unsuccessfully tried to get the spectators to lower their decibel level. More boos. More whistles. And the awkwardness continued as both Bartoli and a stadium announcer kept saying, "S'il vous plaît" — "Please!" — to no avail, while Fritz stood there with his arms crossed. A few U.S. supporters with signs and flags drew Fritz's attention from the front row, and he looked over and said to them, "I love you guys." But the interview was still on hold. Bartoli tried asking a question in English, which only served to draw more boos. So Fritz told her he couldn't hear her. Bartoli moved closer and finally got out a query — but it didn't seem to matter what her words were. Fr...

Cerundolo downs Fritz to reach second week of slam for first time

June 3 (Reuters) - Francisco Cerundolo reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time on Saturday with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5 win over American ninth seed Taylor Fritz in the third round of the French Open. The 24-year-old Argentine's first four outings at the majors all ended in first round defeats but this year he has shown improvement. After a third round showing at the Australian Open, he has now gone one better but dismissed suggestions that he could soon be breaking into the top 10. "I don't feel like I belong in the top 10 because I'm not even in the top 20," the 23rd seed told reporters. "I think I'm going to be in the top 20 or probably close to that next week. I'm working to get to that level. I'm closer, but I have to keep going, keep winning and keep improving. So hopefully one day I can be among those top 10 players." Cerundolo frustrated Fritz with his sharp baseline game to complete victory on Court Suzanne-Lenglen after two hours 50 minutes. "It was a very tough match. He's a Top 10 player. I knew what kind of match it was going to be," he added. "The first set was a bit tense. I didn't play well. After that, I started to play better, more aggressive, less mistakes. But, of course, it was a great battle." Cerundolo, a quarter-finalist at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Rome this season, will continue his Roland Garros campaign against sixth seed Holger Rune on Monday. "I played against him in 2019, I think in a Challenger. But now he's a top...

Taylor Fritz is a tennis player from the USA, who is widely considered the future of American men's tennis. Fritz got off to a great start in his career, winning one junior Grand Slam and reaching the final of another. Ever since turning pro he's been knocking on the doors of the top level, impressing everyone with his big game and calm demeanor. Best finish at each of the four Grand Slams: Australian Open: 1st Round (2016, 2017) French Open: 1st Round (2016, 2018) Wimbledon: 2nd Round (2018) US Open: 3rd Round (2018) Highest Ranking: No. 53 Style of play Fritz is a player with a relentlessly attacking mindset, and always looks to take the ball on. His game is centered around his big serve and forehand, both of which he can hit flat and into the corners. Fritz doesn't vary his shots too often, and only brings out the backhand slice when he is pulled wide. He comes to the net on occasion, when his groundstrokes have put him in a position to hit an easy volley winner. Strengths and weaknesses Fritz's serve is his biggest asset, and also one of the biggest shots on the tour today. He can produce speeds as high as 130 mph on his first serve, and even his second serve has plenty of bite. The American has a blistering forehand, which he uses to gain the ascendancy in rallies. He can hit it both flat and with topspin, and even his running forehand can be deadly. Fritz's backhand is decidedly his weaker wing, but he can be solid with that shot too. He doesn't hit a lot of winners ...
