Andover YMCA water park reopens for first time since last April’s EF

ANDOVER, Kan. (KWCH) - On Saturday, the water park at the Andover YMCA reopened for the first time since an EF-3 tornado tore through the facility in April of 2022. For YMCA members in Andover and in the surrounding community its been a long time coming. “We have been waiting pretty much just a year,” said Emily Funke, who spent Saturday with her kids at the water park. “It’s one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in a long time,” said Ronald Crawford. Saturday marked a special day in the recovery process from last year’s EF-3 tornado. Many families and their kids are glad it’s back. “It’s amazing what they’ve done,” said Funke. “There was tremendous damage from the tornado, and this looks like a brand new facility so we are really happy and excited to be here.” “The building was wiped out,” said Deidra Wagner, whose husband works for the Andover YMCA. “The fact that it’s open now is amazing.” Although the water park has reopened for the Andover YMCA, there is still a lot of work to be done. The facility is eyeing a 2024 return and will offer a family-friendly addition. A ‘Lucky Climber’ will replace the old rock-climbing wall. “These are the memories that you know, especially like a situation like this, we will be able to look back on and be able to be thankful to God that we had this opportunity,” said Crawford. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor lawsuit blames park for Tornado accident

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – A South Jersey couple has sued Six Flags Great Adventure, contending the negligence of park employees caused a water-slide accident. The suit says Jessica Getty of Upper Township sustained “severe and permanent bodily injury” when a flotation device overturned during a ride through the Tornado at Six Flags' Hurricane Harbor water park. Getty and her husband, Oscar, assert the accident was caused by “the improper placement” of the woman and another rider on a multi-person raft in May 2019. Their suit contends Jessica Getty “was unable to maintain a safe riding position, causing the tube to flip over” as it descended through a cascade of water in a massive blue-and-yellow funnel. Earlier: And: Getty was thrown from the flotation device, injuring her head, neck, back, right arm and shoulder. The suit says the injuries required surgery and have prevented Getty from pursuing “her usual employment and other activities.” A Great Adventure representative said the Jackson amusement park does not comment on pending litigation. “The safety of our guests and team members is always our top priority,” said the spokeswoman, Kristin Fitzgerald. The park’s website invites patrons to “go inside the eye of insanity in Tornado.” It notes riders first climb seven stories to ride two- to four-person rafts down a 132-foot tunnel at up to 35 feet per second. Patronsthen enter a 60-foot-wide funnel, where “you’ll swirl …like you’re being blown around with furious force.” “So...
