Mumbai, Dec 23 (PTI) Malayalam star Tovino Thomas says his upcoming film “Minnal Murali” is the story of an ordinary man from Kerala’s Karakulam, who one day gets special powers but does not fly off from the skyscrapers like some of his Hollywood counterparts. Thomas, best known for “7th Day”, “Ennu Ninte Moideen”, “Uyare” and “Mayanadhi”, said the Basil Joseph directorial is an origin story of a local superhero who doesn’t start fighting the bad guy from the very next day. “We wanted to make a film that works with superhero fans across the world as well as for common audiences who are not used to this genre of movies. I imagined my parents, who are not used to ‘Spider-Man’, watching and liking the film,” Thomas told PTI in an interview. “We conceived it as an ordinary man getting superpowers and how he would not save the world from the next day, he would experiment with his powers. Like how we have shown him smashing the wall, catching the fan, etc. The superhero part is the X-factor in the film,” he added. “Minnal Murali” features Thomas as Jaison, a tailor who gains special powers after being struck by lightning. The 32-year-old actor hopes the film is a worthy addition to the ever-growing list of well-made Malayalam movies that have universal appeal. “Malayalam cinema has always got the reputation of making good content movies and emotional dramas are our strong point. Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas on Tuesday released the trailer of his upcoming movie Vazhakk, which is Malayalam for quarrel. The over two-minute-long promo introduces us to the ominous mood of the film, which seemingly follows the mind-bending journey of a man on an unfamiliar land. Tovino plays Siddharth who visits an unfamiliar place despite being advised against it. “It’s a notorious place,” Siddharth is told presumably by a lady friend. What that place in question is notorious for is not revealed in the trailer. But, we get a strong sense of something sinister afoot in the place. Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan has written and directed Vazhakk. Besides playing the lead role, Tovino has also produced the film. Vazhakk seems to have all the typical narrative elements of Sanal’s previous films. The movie is set in a lonely place, filled with characters that carry enormous emotional baggage, and the general dark and sinister mood are unmissable. Sanal Kumar Sasidharan first caught attention nationwide after winning the coveted Hivos Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2017 for his film S Durga. The thriller follows a couple who elope in the middle of the night. Their actual ordeal begins when they hitchhike due to lack of safer transportation. Even though the film received international recognition, it faced a lot of resistance in India.

2020 Filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph announced his film 2403 ft, which is inspired by the real life incidents that happened during the floods that ravaged Kerala last year. The film is bankrolled by Anto Joseph under the banner Anto Joseph Film Company. Jude Anthany has scripted the film in association with John Manthrickal.
