Coming in at No. 2 is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at No. 2 with $55.4 million, followed by The Little Mermaid at No. 3 with $22.8 million, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at No. 4 with $7 million and The Boogeyman at No. 5 with $6.9 million.

‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’: Better without Michael Bay

Yes, the word “Transformers” is in the title, and it does center on giant talking alien robots hiding out on Earth by masquerading as vehicles: a semi truck, a yellow Camaro, a motorcycle and, as the film gets underway, a wisecracking silver Porsche voiced by Pete Davidson. His character, Mirage — a funny, likable goofball who can create multiple hologram-like illusions of itself — is a new one, sort of, to the film franchise, having appeared only once before, in director Michael Bay’s 2011 “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” where he was called Dino and voiced by someone else. Set in 1994, and a direct sequel to “Bumblebee,” “Beasts” is certainly more violent and chaotic than that 1987-set story, a reboot of sorts after the series jettisoned stars Shia LaBeouf and Mark Wahlberg. But “Beasts” does focus on the relationship between Noah (Anthony Ramos), one of its human heroes, and his sickly little brother Kris (Dean Scott Vazquez). At the start of the film, Kris is seen wearing a Power Rangers T-shirt — like Transformers, another property of the Hasbro toy company, whose name is the first thing you see when the movie starts. (Note: “Beasts” also closes with a teaser hinting at a crossover film with a third well-known Hasbro toy line/movie franchise so exciting to fans at a recent screening that a collective gasp could be heard. So yes, this new movie is one long commercial, making it, at least in that sense, a bona fide Transformers movie.) But it also features Kris saying ...

Where To Watch Transformers 5: The Last Knight

Although "Rise of the Beasts" is the seventh film entry, it takes place chronologically prior to each of its predecessors save for the 2018 "Bumblebee" movie. "Bumblebee" is set in the '80s, during which the Autobots hide on Earth amidst their ongoing war against the Decepticons. Meanwhile, "Rise of the Beasts" takes place the following decade, still prior to the timeline of "Transformers," but well after the events of "Bumblebee." For the time being, then, "The Last Knight," will remain the chronologically latest franchise entry, even in the wake of two subsequent releases. Nevertheless, with "Rise of the Beasts" on its way, fans of the "Transformers" films both new and old may nevertheless want to watch "The Last Knight" either before or after "Rise of the Beasts," if only for a refresher on the series thus far now that it's about to grow a little larger and more complex.

At times "The Last Knight" almost feels like it could work, again the plot is bananas and Bay seems to have abandoned some of his worst impulses but ultimately he just doesn't put the work in to make something that could have been enjoyable. And that is what makes this franchise such an oddity. There are five movies that are entirely the vision of a single auteur who just never cared. It should be obvious, to the one person who probably follows my reviews on RottenTomatoes (since I haven't reviewed a film i...
