Tubi: Everything you need to know about the free movie and TV streaming service

Tubi (a.k.a. Tubi TV) is stocked with an array of licensed movies and television shows from across the years, and much like Crackle, the selection is decidedly hit-or-miss. But Tubi really does have a lot of compelling movies on offer, and there's no premium element in play: you'll never have to reach for a credit card. The downside here, however, is that there's no original content and little in the way of recent releases –and it's all video-on-demand and not live TV –but the selection is large and seems to be updated on a regular basis. Luckily, the ads are usually pretty short and innocuous, and pop up inconsistently within and around the content. When watching an episode of a TV show, you'll probably see a short (30-second) commercial beforehand, and maybe a 15-second or 30-second ad in the middle. It varies, though: We watched Cowboy Bebop and didn't see any ads beforehand, but then it had two commercials for a total of 45 seconds at the middle point. With movies, we've encountered different results, as well. A viewing of Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Running Man via the PlayStation 4 app began with a single short ad, but then continued uninterrupted for the next 45 minutes or so. There would also be an ad any time that I resumed the film after stopping, though. On the other hand, Oldboy on the iPad app began without an ad, but then it played one every 12-15 minutes over the course of the flick. That's a little awkward, since the ad break won't always come at an opportu...

The best horror movies on Tubi TV

(Image credit: Film4) The Babadook is an indie horror movie that quickly gained a cult following. The movie follows a single mother struggling to keep up with her precocious son. It's hard enough to raise a child under the best of circumstances, but when an evil entity emerges from the pages of a children's book and begins terrorizing them, things take a dark and sinister turn. — Sarabeth Pollock Werner Krauss and Conrad Veidt in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Image credit: ScreenProd / Photononstop / Alamy Stock Photo) While it may not be the first ever horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the common ancestor to many films in the genre and even some outside of the world of horror. The German silent film tells the story of the mysterious Dr. Caligari and his somnambulist Cesare, who the doctor unleashes in the night to commit murders. One of the trademarks of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the expressionist designs used for the sets that were popular in post-World War I Germany. You can practically draw a straight line from Dr. Caligari to the work of Tim Burton. While the film may not be exactly scary to today’s modern horror audiences, even 100 years later its eerie tone and twist ending can leave viewers unsettled. — Michael Balderston Count Dracula (1970) Christopher Lee in Count Dracula (Image credit: Hammer Film Productions/Atlaspix /Alamy Stock Photo) Most people today know Christopher Lee either from his roles in the Star Wars prequels or the Lord of the Rings...

The 9 Nastiest Movies on Tubi

Hey, gorehounds: Tubi has some remarkably gnarly, nasty horror movies—ones that redefine “hard to watch”—and you can stream them for free. But there’s an extra layer of weirdness when watching a disturbing movie on a free, ad-supported streaming service. What does the Tubi ad server show people who’ve just watched a graphic body disposal scene? Air fresheners, fast food, Instagram parental controls, and more. Here are nine of the nastiest movies on Tubi and the unfortunate ads that sponsor them. Whether or not you press ‘play’ is entirely your decision—don’t send us your therapy bills if you actually watch these seriously disturbing movies. P.s. SPOILERS A-HEAD (get it?). Plot: A depressed, recently widowed expectant mother must defend herself against a devious intruder who wants the baby for herself. Nastiness: The accidental brutal killing of a loved one, male pelvic-perineal mutilation by scissors, ocular impalement, scissors-to-the-forehead, shotgun-to-the-head (close-up), facial charring by hairspray flamethrower, and a non-emergent home C-section—also by scissors. Unfortunate ads: • Frank’s Red Hot—if there’s one thing Inside doesn’t need, it’s extra sauce. • Allstate—for your next tragic accident. • Gain, Tide, and Downy Fabric Softener—keep those onesies smelling fresh and feeling soft. Watch or not: Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s masterpiece of New French Extremity is one of the most disturbing movies we’ve seen. It’s also a taut thriller, and the visceral ...
