MY VISIT TO VADALUR VALLALAR ASHRAM (Post No.4847)

Written by London Swaminathan Date: 24 MARCH 2018 Time uploaded in London – 15-00 Post No. 4847 Pictures shown here are taken by london swaminathan WARNING: PLEASE SHARE MY ARTICLES; BUT DON’T SHARE IT WITHOUT AUTHOR’S NAME AND THE BLOG NAME. BE HONEST; OTHERS WILL BE HONEST WITH YOU Recently I read one interesting anecdote in the Tirukkovilur Tapovanam (year 1999) magazine about Vallalar Ramalinga Swamigal, who established Sathya Gnana Sabhai in Vadalur. Swami Gnanananda of Tapovanam was said to have lived for 150 years. He never boasted about his age or his personal matters. Casually he remarked to his Bhaktas/ devotees the following incident: “ When I was with Ramalinga Swamikal, he asked his devotees to erect a Pandal (thatched shed) in front of the building. It was erected beautifully well with lot of decorations, more than what he expected. So when Vallalar came to that spot again, he asked who erected it. Someone mentioned the name of the gentleman. Vallalar was surprised and asked did Mr…………… erect it? The next minute the thatched shed was burnt to ashes. The reason being the man who erected the shed was a non-vegetarian. Sri Ramalinga Swamikal, who is known as Vallalar was a strict vegetarian and he advocated Vegetarianism more than the Jains. Who is Ramalinga Swamikal? He was born in 1823 in Chidambaram and attained immortality in 1874. He went into a room and dis appeared as a flame (Jyoti). I have explained the phenomena called spontaneous combustion of Hindu s...

Ramalinga Swamigal

Arutprakasa Vallalar Chidambaram Ramalingam (5 October 1823 – 30 January 1874), whose pre-monastic name was Ramalingam , is one of the most famous Tamil Saints. He is commonly known in India and across the world as Vallalar, Ramalinga Swamigal, or Ramalinga Adigal. He is also one of the greatest Tamil poets of the 19th century belonging to a line of Tamil saints known as ‘gnana siddhars’ (gnana meaning higher wisdom). The Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam (The Unified Pure Path of Absolute Truth) was spread and passed on by him not only in theory but especially in practice by his way of living which is an inspiration for his followers. Through the notion of Suddha Sanmarga Sangam (pure path of absolute truth), the saint endeavored to eliminate the caste system. According to Suddha Sanmarga, the prime aspects of human life should be love, connected with charity and divine practice, leading to pure knowledge. Ramalinga advocated the concept of worshipping the flame of a lighted lamp as a symbol of the Eternal Power. Ramalingam was born as the fifth son of Ramayya Pillai and Chinnammai in the small village of Marudhur in Southern India. One day, when Ramayya Pillai was away from home, a saffron-clad saint came to their house. The guest was treated courteously and fed with good dishes. Pleased immensely with the courtesy given to him, the saint at the time of his departure, blessed Chinnammai with some sacred ash and uttered the following words, ‘ You will beget a son, wh...

Vallalar, practical philosopher

How should a rich man save his wealth for the future? Thiruvalluvar had the answer. He said that providing food to the hungry ensured one’s future welfare. That was a rich man’s guarantee for the future. It is easy to discuss Vedanta when our needs on this earth have been met. But when one is starving, it is impossible to think of God, or to indulge in any spiritual seeking. Hunger drives out all other thoughts from our mind. We can think of nothing but food. Everything else has to wait until we have eaten. Vallalar, whose mission was to spread good values, knew that the need for food must first be met before people would seek spirituality. Vallalar was practical in his philosophical approach to life, said Malayaman in a discourse. He, therefore, established a scheme to provide food free of cost. He established the Satya Dharma Salai, in Vadalur, for this purpose. Here, even today, food is provided to everyone, without caste distinctions. Vallalar said Lord Siva danced in the hearts of those who treated all living things alike. Such a pure heart was a much sought after abode as far as God was concerned. Vallalar advised against a man remarrying upon the death of his wife. Vallalar spoke against the subjugation of women. He said that a woman should not be made to remove her mangalsutra when her husband died. He was sorry that while many toiled in the fields, the land was owned by a few. He believed that wealth should not be concentrated in the hands of a few. At the same ti...

Vadalur Vallalar Temple

Introduction The Vallalar Temple lies in Vadalur, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. The temple is called Sathya Gnana Sabha (Hall of True Knowledge). The temple was established by Sri Arutprakasa Ramalinga Vallalar, a great spiritual and social reformer. The Vallalar Temple is the Temple of Wisdom and defines spirituality in a new way. Legend of Sri Arutprakasa Vallalar Sri Arutprakasa Ramalinga Vallalar was born on October 5, 1823. His parents Ramayya Pillai and Chinnamai were Shaivites and took the five-month-old baby to worship Natarajar at the Chidambaram Temple. The father passed away a month later, and the family moved to Madras, where Sabapathi, the elder son, took over the family responsibilities. Ramalinga was prodigious as a child and was being educated by his brother Sabapathi's teacher, but he delighted in writing poems sitting in the temple of Kanthakottam. Sabapathi ordered his wife Pappammal never to allow Ramalinga inside the house for food, but the compassionate sister-in-law fed him secretly. Her compassion moved Ramalinga, who became determined to study. He was given a room at the top of the stairs, a mirror, and a lamp. Ramalinga lavished praise on the Divine, and the Arut Jyothi (Eternal Light) came through the mirror, spilling God's abundant Grace onto him. Thus, Ramalinga obtained Omniscience power directly from God. This divine incident took place in the house at Madras when Ramalinga was nine years of age. In later years, after establishing the Sathy...

Remembering Vallalar: Born in 1823, vanished in 1874

By: Vaman Almost 150 years ago, at midnight on January 30, 1874, Vallalar disappeared. Followers of the poet, mystic, and spiritual healer, believe his “physical body transformed into one of divine light”. Still, the legacy he left behind, along with his body of work — both literary and social — and his philosophy and teachings have left an indelible mark and continue to be followed to this day. Recently, the Tamil Nadu government announced it was constituting a 14-member special committee to plan celebrations for the 200th birth anniversary of Vallalar in cities across the state between October this year and October 2023. Revered as ‘Arut Prakasa Vallalar’ or the ‘munificent light of divine grace’ by his followers, Vallalar was born Chidambaram Ramalingam Pillai in Marudur village near Chidambaram, on the evening of October 5, 1823, as the fifth and last child of village accountant Ramiah and Chinnammai. Ramiah died the following year, and the family moved to Ponneri, a suburb of Chennai, and then to Chennai, staying in a portion of a house on Veerasami Pillai Street in the Seven Wells locality. Vallalar is said to have shied away from conventional instruction and was considered a child prodigy. When he was just nine years old, at the sanctum of Lord Muruga at the Kandakottam temple in George Town, Chennai, he is believed to have recited ‘Deivamanimaalai’, a grand paean of 31 verses. Some of the verses of this classic hymn have gone on to become shining gems in the Tamil ...

THE GREAT SERMON

(Home of perfection where Vallalar attained Immortal body and made his body invisible and mingled with Arutperunjothi Almighty). After unfurling the Suddha Sanmarkam Flag, ( one fourth yellow colour at the top, and three fourth white colour at the bottom). This Maha Upadesa (or) Perupadeasam was given to be noted down by the disciples. Accordingly, all of you should do “VICHAARAM”, either individually solitarily or collectively, along with amicable friends who are harmonous with or fit to your intelligence or knowledge and disciple, or otherwise, if you can have inquiry with VELAYUTHA MUDALIAR, (His disciple), he will reply upto the maximum standard of a man’s enough understanding. We should appeal to the “Almighty” ARUTPERUNJOTHI”, with continuous thinking and singing with prayer for the removal of the so called Thick veil and also realizing our short comings and faults combined with our needs, even when we are sitting and relaxing by lying down on bed; and also we should make efforts with Devotion, and Divine love so that the real truth will be revealed to us. This “VICHAARAM”, is of two kinds; Between these two, the ‘VICHARAM”, which is related to this world “IHA – LOHAM”: is not the real inquiry (VICHAARAM). Because, if anyone is involved in VICHAARAM, it should not be considered as standard “VICHAARAM” is VI + CHAARAM, Here this “VI” is prefixed to distinguish and deny the ordinary worldly “VICHAARAM”; Truly, CHAARAM means misery, sorrow. So “VI + CHAARAM” means to re...
