Vivo's newest flagship phone line arrived on the heels of the company's biggest Android rival. The Chinese phone maker announced the new X90 and X90 Pro on Friday, just days after Samsung's Galaxy S23 launch. The I had a chance to use the Vivo X90 Pro for nearly a week. I tested the camera, battery life and performance, among other features. The camera serves up a versatile range of shots with good clarity during the day and night. Photos have a lovely depth of field. Some images didn't turn out as bright as I'd expected, however, which was a surprise since this phone is equipped with a 1-inch sensor. Larger sensors are designed to allow more light in, and therefore are meant to allow for the production of brighter, clearer images. And yet, as we know from the Sony Xperia Pro-I and Xiaomi 12S Ultra, a 1-inch camera sensor isn't actually an inch big. But it is on the larger size for a phone camera. We put the Vivo X90 Pro through our rigorous DXOMARK Camera test suite to measure its performance in photo, video, and zoom quality from an end-user perspective. This article breaks down how the device fared in a variety of tests and several common use cases and is intended to highlight the most important results of our testing with an extract of the captured data. Overview Key camera specifications: • Primary: 50.3MP 1/00″ sensor, 1.6 μm pixels, f/1.8 aperture lens,Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS • Ultra-wide: 12 MP, f/2.0 aperture lens, 108˚ field of view, AF • Tele: 50 MP 1/2.4″ sensor, 0.7µm pixels, f/1.6 aperture lens, OIS • Video: 8K, 4K at 60/30fps, 1080p at 60/30fps Cons • Autofocus failures • Low contrast on faces in backlit scenes • Fine luminance noise in backlit scenes • Unnatural texture rendering and artifacts, such as, quantization and ghosting, in night mode • More limited dynamic range in preview than in capture • Occasionally unstable and jerky autofocus in video The Vivo X90 Pro takes good advantage of its 1-inch main camera sensor when it comes to photo performance. The camera showed good results in the texture/noise tradeoff in photo, with a good level of details as well as low noise level even down to low light. But when shooting backlit scenes, our tests showed that denoising might not always be efficient. The Vivo X90 Pro’s other strength was its exposure performance, where it managed to recover details in both shadows and highlights thanks to its wide dynamic...

Vivo X90 Pro long

The X90 Pro has a svelte design with a leather back that makes it comfortable to hold and use the device, and it leverages MediaTek's latest Dimensity 9200 platform, putting it on par with the latest that Qualcomm has to offer. The phone has a vibrant AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh that ensures it is smooth in daily use and gaming, and you get all-day battery with 120W fast charging. The biggest differentiator is the camera tech; there's a 1-inch 50MP lens at the back that takes outstanding photos and videos in any situation, and Vivo outdid itself here. You also get a cleaner software and all the extras, and if you're looking for an alternative to the likes of Xiaomi and Samsung, Vivo has a solid contender in the X90 Pro. If I've learned one thing about Vivo's X series, it's that the brand likes to switch things up with every generation. The last few models featured a unique gimbal stabilization tech that Vivo touted heavily, but you won't find that on the X90 Pro. The phone instead leverages on a large sensor and other imaging tweaks to differentiate itself from its predecessors. What's unchanged is the collaboration with Zeiss; Vivo continues to partner with the German optics giant, and there are a few new things on offer this time around. The X90 Pro also sees the introduction of MediaTek's Dimensity 9200 platform. I liked what MediaTek did last year with the Dimensity 9000 and was keen to take a look at this year's offering. With Qualcomm delivering one of its best c...
