By India Today City Desk: Delhi on Tuesday reeled under scorching heat with the maximum temperature soaring to 41.8 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average. The relative humidity oscillated between 39 per cent and 53 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Strong surface winds also prevailed in parts of the city. Earlier, the weather department had predicted that ALSO READ | According to the seven-day forecast by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi is likely to witness a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds during the day on Wednesday. In the next few days, the maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 38 and 28 degrees Celsius respectively. LIGHT RAIN LIKELY Amid the scorching heatwave, Delhiites can expect some respite as the weather department, in its latest bulletin, predicted very light rain and thundershowers at one or two places during the night on Thursday and Friday. The said weather conditions are likely due to the influence of Cyclone Biparjoy, which is gaining steam in the Arabian Sea.

Severe heatwave conditions have been consistently reported over large parts of India since the beginning of the summer season in March. On Sunday, the mercury touched nearly 50 degrees Celsius in some areas of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, a day after Jacobabad in neighbouring Pakistan had recorded 51 degree Celsius. This year, March and April saw early and unprecedented heat across India. March was the warmest and April was the fourth-warmest in 122 years.
