Wellness Forever retail chain grew from ₹8 crore a year to ₹1000 crore without the MSME tag

An Indian drugs retail chain, and now a medtech platform, Wellness Forever, had an annual turnover of ₹8 crore in 2008, when it was founded. Today, the annual revenue is close to ₹1000 crore ($133.3 million). The co-founder Gulshan Bakhtiani revealed to Business Insider that he made this stupendous journey without the tag or benefits of being a micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) in India. This may not be an option for most small business owners who may not be from the big cities, or for those who do not have access to the rich or privileged. However, the experience of Bakhtiani has some nuances and useful lessons to understand ground realities and different approaches to the issue of uplifting small businesses. . The size of the problem Bakhtiani chuckled as he remembered a popular advice in his early years. “Don’t grow your business beyond ₹40 lakh, they would say. This is because beyond a certain revenue, MSMEs wealth has to be audited by a CA,” he shared in a chat with Business Insider. Bakhtiani himself is a chartered accountant. #EmpoweringBusiness | The MSME Exchange: Your problem, their solutions— @BiIndia's @iyer_sriram in conversation wit… https://t.co/sJVeTotL5G— Business Insider India (@BiIndia) There is growing cry for additional support for India’s millions of MSMEs struggling to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. On May 13, the Indian government allowed companies up to a revenue of ₹100 crore to be classified as...

Published study shows chronic stress drives the brain to crave comfort and junk food

When you're stressed, junk food can help you relax in the short term. However, new research indicates that combining stress with calorie-dense 'comfort' food causes long-term brain changes that result in never feeling full, overeating, and increased cravings for sweet foods. Stress has become The researchers discovered that stress could trick our brain into a constant food-craving mode, causing us to reach for more tempting treats more often. According to Professor Herzog, the study's senior author and a visiting scientist at the Garvan Institute, stress alters our brain's natural satiety response. "Our findings reveal stress can override a natural brain response that diminishes the pleasure gained from eating, meaning the brain is continuously rewarded to eat," Herzog explains. When we are full, our brain normally turns off the reward system, but when stressed, this off-switch appears broken. Like what you see? Sign up to our bodyandsoul.com.au newsletter for more stories like this. This activity takes place in the lateral habenula region of the brain. When activated, it dampens the reward signals in general. However, this area remains dormant under chronic stress and a high-calorie diet. This produces an endless stream of reward signals that encourage us to continue eating with a preference for sweet, palatable foods. Herzog claims that "chronic stress, combined with a high-calorie diet, can drive more and more food intake as well as a preference for sweet, highly palatab...

How to avoid forever chemicals in food, drinking water

correction An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that boxes of cake mix often have high levels of PFAS. It was a prepared, packaged chocolate cake sample that had tested positive for PFAS, but the Food and Drug Administration later said the result was a false positive. This version has been updated. It’s also not clear how much of our exposure to PFAS comes directly from the food supply. The FDA tested for 30 different types of PFAS in samples of 718 foods. It found 701 of the samples to be free of PFAS. Experts say the study was too limited in scope to draw broad conclusions because there are thousands of PFAS in use. Check the results of water testing where you live and consider adding a water filtration system at home. Carbon filters on faucets or in water pitchers can reduce the levels of PFAS, if the filters are replaced regularly, Andrews said. Reverse osmosis systems installed under sink faucets “can typically eliminate the PFAS contamination.” The low-density plastic used for bottled water is not considered a potential source of PFAS contamination, Peaslee said. Unless a manufacturer makes a specific safety claim about PFAS, there’s no way for a consumer to know if the bottled water itself has been tested. “Bottled water is a lot safer than drinking a contaminated well with PFAS in it,” Peaslee said.
