What Is Meant by Power Factor?

Low power factor reduces an electrical system’s distribution capacity by increasing current flow. Therefore, having a low power factor is inefficient and expensive. But what is power factor and what affects it? A typical distribution system is limited in the amount of current it can carry; power factor, expressed as a percentage, is an indicator of the amount of total current that can be used to create work (active power). The closer the power factor is to 1.00 (100%), the lower the amount of current needed to do said work. For example, a load with a power factor of 0.80 means that only 80% of the power is being used effectively to do work. In a perfect world, all power drawn from the power system would be converted to useful work, but this is not so in the real world. To fully describe power factor, complex equations are needed. For a simpler understanding, though, the U.S. Department of Energy uses a simple analogy of the Ideally, the horse would be placed in front of the railcar to provide the most-efficient towing force; however, that isn’t always possible. The angle of the tow represents the change in power factor—the smaller the angle, the better the power factor, the larger the angle, the lower the power factor (Figure 1). 1. Angles affect useful work. The analogy shown here provides a visualization to help understand power factor. Power factor is defined as the ratio of real (working) power to apparent (total) power. If the horse is led closer to the center of the ...

In electrical engineering, the power factor (PF) of an AC electrical power system is defined as the ratio of working power (measured in kilowatts, kW) absorbed by the load to the apparent power (measured in kilovolt amperes, kVA) flowing through the circuit. Power factor is a dimensionless number in the closed interval of −1 to 1. The “ideal” power factor is one (also referred to as “unity”). This is when there is no reactive power through the circuit, and hence apparent power (kVA) is equal to real power (kW). A load with a power factor of 1 is the most efficient loading of the supply. That said this is not realistic, and the power factor will in practice be less than 1. Various To help explain this better, let’s take a step back and talk about what power is. Power is the capacity to do work. In the electrical domain, electrical power is the amount of electrical energy that can be transferred to some other form (heat, light, etc) per unit of time. The Hence when we consider the entire circuit consisting of a The cosine of this phase difference is called the electrical power factor. This factor (-1 < cosφ < 1 ) represents the fraction of the total power that is used to do the useful work. The other fraction of electrical power is stored in the form of magnetic energy or electrostatic energy in the inductor and This is called P = Active power = Total electrical power.cosφ and its unit is watt. The other fraction of power is calle...

Power Factor

By The ADE Power Generators Team August 14th, 2018 Power Factor is the ratio of actual power (kW) to apparent power (kVA) in an alternating current circuit, represented as a decimal number between 0 and 1. Power Factor can also be represented by thinking of a simple clock face, where a PF of 1 is represented by 12 o'clock. A PF of 0 can be either side of 12, either at 9 or 3 o'clock (depending on which way the kVArs are flowing in reference to the kW). The number isn't signed and is usually accompanied by leading or lagging. i.e. the current is leading or lagging the voltage. PF is caused by kVArs which are signed. When a generator is producing (positive) kVArs the load is inductive, such as a motor, and thus the current is lagging the voltage. Terms used to explain this are inductive, lagging and over excitation. When a If the generator is feeding a purely resistive load, such as a heating element, there are no kVArs, and the PF is 1, also known as unity. This is when kW (real power) is equal to Power Factor Formula PF can be calculated using the following formula: PF = kW / kVA Power Factor Calculator Use our handy calculator below to quickly calculate power factor using the kW & kVA values: For more information, or to discuss your power requirements with our team of experts, call us on ADE Power Ltd ADE Power have constantly driven change and created innovative solutions for the worldwide power generation & distribution market. What is Power Factor?

We know that power consumed in a DC circuit is given by the multiplication of voltage (V) and current (I). This mean, Power = VI But for AC circuit, the above formula is not correct. A third parameter, called the power factor is also included. Thus for AC circuit, Power = VI x (pf), where pf is power factor of the load. In this post we will discuss, Power Factor Definition: Power factor is defined as the cosine of angle between the voltage phasor and current Let us consider a simple AC circuit to better understand the concept. Since the above circuit is an inductive circuit, the current through the circuit will lag the voltage by some angle. Let us assume, this angle to be Ø. Now we draw the phasor diagram. If Ø is the angle between the voltage and current phasor, therefore as per the definition pf = CosØ ………(1) Since -1≤CosØ≤ 1, therefore the value of pf is always less than or equal to 1 but greater or equal to zero. It cannot be negative as current will either lag or lead the voltage phasor to a maximum of 90º. Therefore magnitude of Ø cannot be more than 90º. Formula of Power Factor: The power factor formulas are listed below: • If we know the value of angle of lead or lag i.e. Ø then pf can be calculated using information (1). pf = CosØ • It can also be calculated from the pf = Active Power / Apparent Power Power Factor for Resistance, Capacitor and Inductor: • The current flowing through the resistance is always in phase with the applied voltage. This means that the a...

Power Factor Explained

Power Factor Explained. In this tutorial we look at power factor. We’ll learn what is power factor, what is good and bad power factor, how to compare power factor, the causes of power factor, why and how to fix power factor as well as some example calculations to help you learn electrical engineering. Scroll to the bottom to watch the FREE YouTube tutorial So, what is power factor? What is power factor Power factor is a unit-less number used in alternating current circuits, it can be used to refer to a single piece of equipment such as an induction motor or for the electricity consumption of an entire building. In either case it represents the ratio between true power and apparent power. The formula being PF = kW / KVA. So, what does this mean? My favourite analogy to explain this is to use the beer analogy. We pay for a beer by the glass, but inside the glass there is both beer and foam. The more beer we have, the less foam there is so we get good value for money. If there is a lot of foam then there’s not a lot of beer and we’re not getting good value for money. Power Factor beer analogy The beer represents our true power or our kW, kilowatts. This is the useful stuff we want and need, this is what does the work. The foam represents our reactive power or our kVAr, kilovolt-amps reactive. This is the useless stuff, there will always be some and we have to pay for it but we can’t use it so we don’t want too much of it. (it does actually have a use and purpose but we’ll see...
