Over the years

Over the years Today’s expression is a somewhat easy one: “over the years.” You probably understood it in the original context, but I wanted to spend some time show you how and when to use this expression. Earlier in the lesson, I said, “Over the years, Wikipedia’s editors have worked hard to ensure the accuracy of its articles.” This simply means, “for a long period of time.” That long period of time has to be several years long. Wikipedia’s editors have worked hard to ensure the accuracy of its articles for a long period of time. We usually say, “over the years” when reflecting back on something. You might reflect back on how something has changed, on a long-term effort, or just on how something has been for a long time. The key is that the change took a long time to be complete. It’s 2021; you would not say “over the years, TikTok has become more popular.” That change happened pretty quickly. We reserve this for changes or developments that took a longer time. Over the years, Austin, Texas, has grown from being a small university town to being a tech powerhouse. That’s a change. Austin has grown in importance. It’s the capital of the state of Texas and it’s home to the University of Texas. But these days, it’s much more than that. About a million people live there now and a lot of companies have their corporate or regional headquarters there. There was a furniture store near my house growing up called Bob’s Discount Furniture. Just a couple of locations. The owner would...

Modern science: What’s changing?

From Gregor Mendel’s experiments with peas to the work on plant evolution in a modern lab, and from J.J. Thomson’s primitive equipment to today’s Large Hadron Collider — science has indeed come a long way. Thomson photo © the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University; Large Hadron Collider photo © CERN. When Gregor Mendel began his investigations of plant genetics in the 1800s, he worked alone — a middle-aged European monk counting peas in the abbey garden. One hundred and fifty years later, modern plant genetics laboratories, like Chelsea Specht’s below, look a lot more diverse and employ the latest DNA sequencing techniques. When J.J. Thomson discovered a new particle of matter — the electron — at the turn of the century, his lab equipment mainly consisted of vacuum tubes, magnets, and some simple wiring. One hundred years later, scientists searching for new particles like the Higgs boson use a supercollider — a 17-mile-long machine that costs several billion dollars and will produce process of science itself? Has this fundamental aspect of the scientific enterprise changed over time? Science will always look for explanations for what goes on in the Publication and peer review VIRTUAL SCIENCE Some journals have taken the free distribution of information to a new level by making original scientific articles open...

How has society has changed over the last 50 years? — Comparonomics

The creation of comparonomic graphs about social factors are a little more subjective for a couple of reasons. The first is that the changes are, in general, more subjective and open for debate depending on your worldview. The second is that even the direction of change and whether that is good or not is subjective. Changes in social trends are subjective First, we must agree how a social pattern has changed and then whether the change is in a positive direction. We can all agree that society’s acceptance of non-heterosexual behaviour has become much more prevalent. It was illegal in most places back in the 1970s. Many folks now think persecuting people based on who they love is an inappropriate thing. However, if you are at the edge of some religious groups, this acceptance of immoral behaviour is considered a horrific, scary, plummeting of moral standards. The Ku Klux Klan will not view decreased racism positively, whereas most of us think it is a great thing. For many folks, the fact that women are treated more fairly than in the past is a good thing. However, from the ISIS caliphate’s perspective, more rights for women is a bad thing and they have chosen to fix it by actions that many of us would see as making matters worse. Whether a change is good or not is a value judgment that we want to make explicit. If you are of the view that we should treat arbitrary subsections of the population as second-class citizens, then you will probably struggle with this chapter (prob...
