Agar Khan palace is located on the main Nagar Highway at Shashtri Nagar which is spread across 19 acres. Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III built this palace in 1982 as an act of charity. It took 5 years for 1000 workers to build it at a cost of Rs. 12,00,000. This building was once used as a prison by the British for Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadeo Desai as well as many freedom fighters. Aga Khan Palace served as the Prison for Mahatma Gandhi in Pune from Aug1942 to May 1944. He lived here along with his wife Kasturba, His secretary Mahadev Desai & Sarojini Naidu. During Quit India moment both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadeo Desai died of heart attach in these premises. Their memorials made of marble still stand here. Some of the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi are placed next to the two Samadhis. With all this history this Italian architecture building is now the headquarters of the Gandhi National Memorial Society.
