Four Hemispheres of the World: Definition & Map

There are many different ways that the Earth could be divided into hemispheres, but it is usually only divided in two ways. First, the Earth can be separated into Northern and Southern hemispheres by dividing it along the Equator, an imaginary line which runs horizontally around the middle of the Earth. Everything above the Equator is in the Northern hemisphere, while everything below the Equator is in the Southern hemisphere. Another way that you can divide the Earth is into Eastern and Western hemispheres. It's a little more difficult to decide which line to use to create these hemispheres than it was for the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Typically, the Eastern hemisphere is understood to be the area east of the Prime Meridian and west of the Antemeridian, and the Western hemisphere is the area west of the prime meridian and east of the Antemeridian. The Prime Meridian is the line of zero degrees longitude, which runs from the North to the South Pole, passing through the edge of western Europe and Africa. At the poles, it connects to the Antemeridian, which passes primarily through the Pacific Ocean, to form a complete circle around the Earth. North America and South America are wholly in the Western hemisphere, while most of the rest of the world's land mass lies in the Eastern hemisphere. Many more people, about 82% of the total population of the world, live in the Eastern hemisphere. A hemisphere is formed when you cut a sphere in half. The Earth can be divided i...
