Arul Mozhy Varman is an assistant professor of chemical engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University. He received his doctorate in energy, environmental and chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biomass Science and Conversion Technologies at Sandia National Laboratories, California. The team of director's eagerly-awaited magnum opus unveiled the poster Tuesday. Karthi's look in the film has been revealed a day after the unit chose to release the look of Vikram as Aditya Karikalan. Taking to Twitter, Karthi said, "With all your blessings, bringing to you #Vanthiyathevan and #Semban (the horse)." The film, the first part of which will release on September 30 this year, will release in five languages -- Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. ‘ In the first film, Ratnam focused a lot on world-building and exploring the intricate web of relationships between the various members of the Chola family. In a recent interview with Cinema Express, Ratnam summed up the difference between the two movies aptly, “ ‘PS 1’ was an introduction, ‘PS 2’ is the actual film’. The titular character, Arulmozhi Varman (aka Ponniyin Selvan), was presumed drowned in the sea along with his trusted aide, Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. Throughout the film, Ratnam left us with innumerable questions, such as does Nandini, the Pazvuhoor queen, finally exact revenge on Aditha Karikalan, the eldest Chola prince? Does Arulmozhi Varman survive? The movie gives an answer to all of them and ties up the loose ends left by the prequel. Aditha Karikalan’s Fate According to Nilakanta Sastri (‘The Cholas’), Karikalan was assassinated by the associates of the Pandya king Veerapandyan, whom he defeated and killed at the battle of Chevur. Kalki Krishnamurthy ( the author of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ the five-part book series from which the film is adapted) was ambiguous about his fate.
