CH_3 OH and HCI both dissolve in water, but the dissolved HCI conducts electricity, while the dissolved CH_3 OH doesn't. Why?

The # HCl # is an ionic compound which is separated by the polar nature of water into H+ and Cl- ions. These charged particles conduct electricity. ethyl alcohol is a covalent compound which is separated by the polar nature of water into separate molecules. These separate molecules are not charged and so do not conduct electricity. Be careful about "black and white" statements like "this doesn't conduct electricity". In reality, a solution of methanol and water does conduct electricity, just to a MUCH lower extent than a solution of HCl in water. HCl dissociates into #H_3O^+# and #Cl^-# ions in aqueous #2CH3OH = CH_3OH_2^++ −CH_3O^-# The self-ionisation constant of methanol will be very low, it will be only marginally different to that of water (which is about #10^(−14)#. So the ions will be present and will conduct electricity in a methanol/water solution, it just does it to a very very small extent. But to say that they "do not conduct" electricity implies a conductivity of zero. It will not be zero, but it will be EXTREMELY small.

Conductivity of Acids and Bases

Both sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid dissociate almost completely into ions when in water solution. Therefore solutions of these substances conduct electricity very well.But acetic acid (K a= 1.76 x 10 -5) 1and ammonia (K b= 1.78 x 10 -5) 2only dissociate slightly in water. Therefore their solutions only conduct electricity weakly. Ammonia dissociates according to the equation: NH 3( aq) + H 2O( l) NH 4 + ( aq ) + OH - ( aq ) Make sure that the power to the conductivity tester is turned off.Turn on the conductivity tester. Immerse the leads of the conductivity tester in the beaker containing deionized water. Point out that the light bulb does not light up. Turn off the conductivity tester. Rinse the leads with deionized water.Repeat this procedure using the remaining solutions.The bulb should light up brightly for the hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions and dimly for the ammonia and acetic acid solutions. DANGER! When the conductivity tester is on it is an open 120V AC circuit. Touching the leads when the tester is on could result in severe electrical shock. Turn off the tester immediately after each test. Wear goggles. 1M hydrochloric acid, ammonia solution, sodium hydroxide solution, and acetic acid are all caustic. If they get on your skin wash with soap and water. If they get in your eyes flush with water for 15 minutes and get immediate medical attention.
