Cyclone Biparjoy: Heavy rain in Mumbai, Gujarat's Kutch braces for storm impact; PM Modi holds review meet

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane and an orange alert for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts of Gujarat. Biparjoy is the first storm brewing in the Arabian Sea this year. Currently over the east-central Arabian Sea, the cyclone moved northwards with a speed of 7 kmph in the last six hours, the weather office said in its daily cyclone advisory. Sunil Kamble, scientist and head of IMD, Mumbai and Regional Meteorological Centre (Western India), said Cyclone Biparjoy is currently about 500-600 kilometres away from Mumbai. "There is no direct impact on Mumbai because of the cyclone. The pre-monsoon showers and increased wind speed are a result of the cyclone effects," he said. ORANGE ALERT IN SAURASHTRA & KUTCH COASTS The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert ('be prepared') for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts of Gujarat, where extremely severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is likely to "Cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast: Orange Message. ESCS Biparjoy at 0530 IST of today over east-central and adjoining NE Arabian Sea near latitude 19.2N and longitude 67.7E, about 380 kilometres south south-west of Devbhumi Dwarka. To cross near Jakhau Port, Gujarat by noon of June 15," the IMD tweeted. "It is very likely to move nearly northward till June 14 morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by noon...

Michigan’s week

We will start with our forecasted temperatures between tonight and Friday. Temperatures will stay cool, with highs in the Lower Peninsula hanging around the 60 degree mark on Tuesday. We then see a steady increase into the mid 70s by Friday. Overnight lows will prove to be chilly, with temperatures Tuesday morning hanging around the 40-degree mark near Traverse City, while areas farther south will congregate near the 50-degree mark. These lows will gradually recover, with lows on Thursday rising into the 50s. This gradual warmup gets stunted on Friday, with clear skies and light winds combining to drop our lows back down to the 40s. The Upper Peninsula will be a different story. Daytime temperatures will struggle to escape the 50s with the combination of rain and wind on Tuesday, until making a nice recovery into the 70s by Friday. Although overnight lows remain primarily in the 40s, some places in the U.P. will fail to escape the 50s during the week. This is due to a pesky northern wind that will blow cold lake air onshore. This will cut down on any warmth those areas will receive.

Thousands lose power as rain, wind hits Spokane area

Brief downpours and strong gusts pounded the Inland Northwest on Thursday, downing and uprooting trees and leaving thousands of people without power. More than 8,400 Avista customers in Eastern Washington and North Idaho had no power shortly after 8 p.m., according to the energy company’s outage map. The region received one-quarter to one-half inch of rain Thursday afternoon and early evening, according to Valerie Thaler, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Spokane. The Spokane International Airport received 0.38 inches of precipitation, Felts Field got 0.24 and Deer Park got 0.27, Thaler said. In North Idaho, the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls areas received 0.2 to 0.25 inches, while 0.54 inches fell in Harrison. Downpours were reported in some areas, but they were short -lived, Thaler said. She said a person in Greenacres reported 0.16 inches of rain in 15 minutes, while the Five Mile area had 0.3 inches in 24 minutes. “Some areas did get pretty heavy rain, but the storms were moving pretty quickly,” Thaler said. A light drizzle and calm winds could be felt around 8 p.m. in downtown Spokane. However, wind gusts reached 45 mph earlier in the Spokane area, said Charlotte Dewey, meteorologist at the weather service. Thaler said the weather service received reports of downed and uprooted trees, which suggested wind speeds of over 55 mph, though those speeds were not observed. Isolated showers are possible Friday morning, but Thaler said heavy rain could greet Spokane...
