Chinese table tennis players swept both the singles titles at the WTT Star Contender Goa 2023 on Sunday. World No. 4 Wang Yidi brushed aside Chinese Taipei’s Cheng-I-Ching, the world No. 31, by a 4-0 (11-6,11-6,11-8,11-4) margin to secure the women’s singles crown at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Panjim. Wang Yidi’s win, her second straight WTT Star Contender title after her triumph at Budapest in July last year, confirmed the singles sweep for China as the men’s singles final was an all-Chinese affair. Liang Jingkun, the world No. 7, beat 17-year-old compatriot Lin Shidong 4-2 (11-6,9-11,10-12,12-10,12-10,11-9) in a tense men’s singles title decider. The Japanese pair of Miyu Nagasaki and 14-year-old Miwa Harimoto, meanwhile, won the women’s doubles title with a comfortable 3-0 (11-9,11-7,11-6) win over the Chinese Taipei’s Cheng and Li Yu-Jhun. “This is my first time winning a WTT women’s doubles title, I am really very happy,” Miwa Harimoto, who lost the mixed doubles final to the Korean pair of Jang Woojin and Jeon Jihee on Saturday, said after the match. The South Korean pair of An Jaehyun and Cho Seungmin took the men’s doubles crown, ensuring Korea matched China with two titles in Goa. The WTT Star Contender Goa is the highest level of table tennis ever to be witnessed in India where the biggest global superstars of the sport will be seen in action. Big Table Tennis Players in WTT Contender Goa The 34-year-old Ma, widely regarded as the best to have ever played the game, is a two-time Olympic champion. Ma will also have his fellow countryman and rival Fan Zhendong, the current world champion and world number one, in the men's singles. Indian TT legend Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnansekaran will also be putting up a challenge in the men's singles category. Among other leading lights of the men's game, world number four Tomakazu Harimoto of Japan and world number six Truls Moregard of Sweden, world number eight Lin Yun-Ju from Chinese Taipei and world number nine Darko Jorgic from Slovenia will also be seen in action. Goa to host India’s first WTT table tennis tournament

Panaji, the capital of Goa, will host India’s first-ever World Table Tennis (WTT) series event. The WTT Star Contender Goa 2023 tournament has been scheduled from February 27 to March 5 at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, located in the Goa University campus situated in the southern Taleigao neighbourhood. The WTT Series consists of a set of official professional Cup Finals, Champion Series and the Contender Series are the other three WTT Series tournament tiers. The Contender Series is further subdivided into two categories - 14 lower-tier WTT Contender tournaments and six top-tier WTT Star Contender events. The six Star Contender events pit 48 men and women in the respective singles main draws. Players ranked in the world top 30 are eligible to play and four among them need to be in the top 20. WTT Star Contender tournaments also feature 16-team doubles main draws for men and women alongside an eight-team mixed doubles main draw. Eight qualifiers each in singles and four in doubles also get to progress to the main draw while host countries are also provided with sufficient wild-card entries in both singles and doubles categories. “WTT is thrilled to be coming to Goa to host the very first WTT event in India.
