The 14 km long tunnel will reduce the time to cross the Zojila Pass from more than 3 hours to just 15 minutes. The initial cost of the tunnel is 930 million US dollars. It will be the longest bi-directional tunnel in Asia when completed. • During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, Zoji La was seized by Pakistani supported invaders in 1948 in their campaign to capture Ladakh. The pass was re-captured by Indian forces on 1 November in an assault code named Operation Bison, which achieved success primarily due to the surprise use of tanks. It was then the highest altitude at which tanks had operated in combat in the world. • Zoji La is about 100 km from Srinagar, the state capital, and 15 km from Sonmarg. It was the day we had to cross the mighty Zozila Pass which everyone had been scaring us. Got news that it was open. Had to lie to others about the opening time about the pass but when we reached Zozila it wasn't like anything which was mentioned in blogs before. It was raining again that day and was getting colder and colder. It took us a while to come out of heavily guarded Srinagar, where there were police everywhere. Every petrol bunk, ATM and anything of slightest importance were surrounded by lot of police personnel's. In general the town was qu...

Zojila Pass (Sonamarg)

We drove from Sonamarg through the Zojila Pass to Zero Point and Dras (Kargil War Memorial). The grandeur and beauty of the landscape cannot be described or imagined. The road is gradually winding and ascends quite rapidly. Looking down into the valley from which you have ascended is breathtaking. The sheer face of the mountain with the narrow road cut into its face and the opposite rolling mountain range with thick snow on craggy rock and clean, clear rivers running through, makes you feel enveloped in a blanket of immense beauty. A few things to remember. Plan the day and time of your trip well. On Friday, it is closed for maintenance. The timings during which traffic can pass through from each side - Sonamarg or Dras - is released through a travel advisory by the authorities based on weather. We left early ( 5.45 am) which was a very good decision. We avoided the crowd of tourists on the way and reached Zero Point by 7.15 am. We really just wanted to enjoy the landscape in peace. Besides us, there was only a small group of bikers and we reveled in the peace and beauty all-around. The glacier with untouched fresh snow extended on all sides bright and sparkling in the early morning sunlight. No picture can do justice to the place and we tried to capture the moment in our hearts and memories. We drove onto Dras and the Kargil War Memorial and spent some time there. A very well maintained facility and we were glad we visited. On the way we saw Tiger Peak from the road in th...
