Chamari Athapaththu: 'Sanath aiya inspired me. I hope he reads this'

As told to Andrew Fidel Fernando| December 18, 2020 I was six when we won the 1996 World Cup. I loved that whole team, but I especially loved aiya bat, it was almost like I was playing in the game myself. I've been a left-handed batsman since I was little, and I think that has partly got to do with Sanath aiya (I write and do most other things right-handed). My stance and my bat grip were just like his in those days as well. We used to play in the garden, and there were a lot of boys in the neighbourhood, both older and younger, I used to play with. I was the only girl, but it wasn't easy for them to beat me. I won a lot of the time, actually. I used to play Sanath's flick and cut often. Even now people tell me that I have many of Sanath aiya's shots. I guess I loved his batting so much some of it was going to seep into my game. I even tried to bowl left-arm orthodox like him. But it didn't work so well, so I switched to offspin. Back then I used to imitate the bowling actions and batting stances of a lot of that 1996 team. I'd even know how to walk to the ground and take guard like some of those players. I used to imitate these for my father's office friends and they loved it. I could bowl like Muttiah Muralitharan or Kumar Dharmasena or Pramodya Wickramasinghe or Ravindra Pushpakumara. With Sanath aiya, I could do so many of his mannerisms - how he adjusted his pads, how he pushed his helmet up and down. I can still see all that in my mind, because I copied so much of it...

Two star Sri Lankan players feature in ICC women's Player of the Month May award nominees – ThePrint –

Dubai [UAE], June 6 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the nominees of the women’s Player of the Month for May with two star Sri Lankan players dominating the list. The Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s inclusion in the nominees is hardly a surprise as the flow of runs from her bat has been constant, even with the added responsibility of captaincy, which makes her individual feats quite remarkable. As the backbone of the Sri Lanka women’s team, she made three top scores across the T20I series win over Bangladesh, and a half-century against the same opponent in ICC Women’s Championship play. Sri Lanka’s Harshitha Madavi is the second player to feature in the nominee list. The left-hander has showcased her true potential as a player, with her performances during May. The 24-year-old was a consistent performer with the bat in the T20I series win over Bangladesh. She also played an unbeaten knock of 45* in the third ODI against the same opponents to ensure important ICC Women’s Championship points. In the shorter format, Madavi displayed her ability to score runs at a brisk pace. After top-scoring with 45 in the first T20I, Madavi backed up the innings with a calm 29* to see her team to victory in match two, then lifted her bat in the air with a performance of 51* (42) in the third T20I. Finally, the 19-year-old Thipatcha Putthawong from Thailand made her way into the list as she continues to dazzle everyone with her performances. She ha...
