CP Rizwan, the first Keralite to lead an international cricket team

KOCHI: CP Rizwan, the first Malayali to score a century in international cricket, is set to become the first from the state to captain an international cricket team. The 34-year-old from Thalassery has replaced Ahmed Raza as the captain of the UAE T20 squad, announced on Thursday, that will feature in the Asia Cup Qualifiers beginning on Saturday. Raza, however, will continue to lead the UAE ODI side. Rizwan shot to fame by scoring a match-winning century for UAE against Ireland in an ODI at Abu Dhabi in January last year. He has played 29 ODIs for UAE scoring 736 runs at an average of 32. However, he has represented UAE in only seven T20Is, scoring 100 runs at an average of 16.66. He played for Students Club, Thalassery and Cordiant Club, Kochi in his formative years. He represented Kerala at the junior level but never got an opportunity to represent the senior state team. An engineering graduate from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Rizwan moved to the UAE in 2014 and made his international debut in 2019. “It has been a good journey with lots of ups and downs. It has never been easy. God has been kind. I am someone who has always dreamt of playing international cricket. God has helped me achieve my dream. One of the bigger things is to lead a nation. I am very much humbled at this opportunity,” Rizwan told TOI. Besides Rizwan, there are two more Malayalis in the UAE squad for the Asia Cup Qualifiers. Kozhikode native Basil Hameed and Kannur native Alishan Sha...

Kozhikode native Basil Hameed and Kannur native Alishan Sharafu are two others from the state in the side coached by former Indian cricketer Robin Singh. UAE begin the Asia Cup qualifying campaign against Kuwait on Sunday. Hong Kong and Singapore are the other teams featuring in the qualifiers with only the winner advancing to the tournament proper. If UAE do go through, they will be clubbed with India and Pakistan in Group A which will give Rizwan and co. an opportunity to play against the Men In Blue, a team that they first aspired to play for. “It will ...

T20 World Cup: A great moment for UAE cricket, says Rizwan after Namibia win

Published: Thu 20 Oct 2022, 5:06 PM The UAE captain CP Rizwan was elated after the team's historic win over Namibia in their final T20 World Cup match in Geelong, Australia, on Thursday. Rizwan's team held their nerve in a nail-biting last-over finish to script a memorable seven-run win over the Africans. Chasing 149, Namibia were in all sorts of trouble at 69 for seven. But David Wiese (55 off 36 balls) and Ruben Trumpelmann (25 not out off 24 balls) staged a stunning fightback. In the end, Muhammad Waseem, the opening batsman who had earlier scored 50 off 41 balls, bowled a brilliant last over to drag the UAE over the line for their first-ever win in a World Cup match. "First of all, I would like to thank almighty Allah. It is a great moment for UAE cricket, first ever victory in a World Cup. So I'm really grateful. I would first of all like to thank our coach, Robin Singh Sir, and our management who kept belief in us," skipper Rizwan said after the match. The UAE bowed out of the tournament on a high, but their campaign would have been better if their batsmen had delivered in their first two matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka. "We were doing it in patches but it was just a matter of time. Today all departments clicked so I'm really happy for the win," Rizwan, who scored a crucial unbeaten 43 off 29 balls, said. Rizwan then revealed why he asked part-time pacer Waseem to bowl the decisive final over when Namibia needed 14 runs with three wickets and two set ba...

Rizwan named UAE's new T20I captain

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) made the announcement in a press release following the side’s Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Scotland, and ahead of the Asia Cup Qualifier in Oman. Rizwan will take over the role from Ahmed Raza, who will remain as ODI captain. Rizwan's first assignment is set to be a clash against Kuwait in Al-Amerat later this week. The ECB, in a statement, said it had decided to adopt a split-captaincy role. “The committee believes, after extensive discussions, and following a detailed review of the side’s recent 50-over performance, by providing the respective Captain’s with a sole-format-focus it creates a strong leadership succession plan, and encourages a singular commitment to fine-tuning strategic on-field components of the game," the statement read. "UAE’s T20 game is in good-standing and has exceptional depth. This strategy comes at the optimal time to assess what is best for this format moving into the (ICC T20) World Cup and beyond. UAE’s High-Performance unit believes this presents a solid opportunity to consider and open up all options – player make-up and Captaincy – to take the game forward." Raza had a successful stint as captain of the T20I side. UAE are in the mix for automatic qualification for the Cricket World Cup Qualifier next year on the 50-over side, and the T20I side were imperious during their qualification to the T20 World Cup earlier in the year. Raza has an outstanding record as T20I captain of the side, winning 18 ...

EXCLUSIVE: 'ILT20 is an opportunity to put our case forward to IPL teams', says Gulf Giants' CP Rizwan

The ILT20 is set to begin with plenty of superstars set to make their appearance in the middle east. "Definitely! It is a great stage for players to put their case forward. It is a great motivation for the cricketers and it makes their chances higher to play in the IPL. It is a great opportunity for the players who dream play in one of the biggest leagues in world cricket," said Rizwan. The T20 format has taken cricket by storm over the last decade and more, and the juggernaut has no plans of slowing down either. The focus turns to the UAE with the ILT20, where the Adani’s Gulf Giants will be looking to make a big splash beginning 13th January. More often than not, the big names from the traditionally strong cricketing countries steal the limelight, however, Adani’s Gulf Giants are putting their faith and backing in players from the UAE. Picking up the baton first is CP Rizwan, the captain of the UAE cricket team, who is raring to go. "To work with an experienced person like Andy Flower, it is a great honour for us, and in terms of the squad, we have a good combination of dynamic, explosive, experienced and classy players. The likes of Shimron Hetmyer, James Vince and Chris Lynn can all destroy teams single-handedly on their day. We can’t wait to hit the ground and produce the goods," Rizwan said. When asked about who are the players he is most looking forward to work with in Adani’s Gulf Giants’ squad, Rizwan said, “James Vince, he has played franchise cricket all over th...
