Cross Marks on Doors, Cries of Extermination: How Uttarakhand Became Our Hate Speech Capital

Cross Marks on Doors, Cries of Extermination: How Uttarakhand Became Our Hate Speech Capital A campaign by Hindutva supporters to drive out supposedly 'illegal' Muslim shopkeepers and vendors from the state comes along with various kinds of attempts, coupled with the government's inaction against hate campaigners in the state, in creating fear among Muslims in the state. New Delhi: Videos of disturbing hate speeches and instances of vigilantism have emerged from Uttarakhand amidst the recent campaign by Hindutva supporters to drive out supposedly “illegal” Muslim shopkeepers and vendors from the state. The new charge against the minority, that of “ v yapar jihad” literally translates into “business jihad”. This is apart from the bogeys of “love jihad” and “land jihad”, which give credence to the imagined conspiracies of Muslim men converting Hindu women through marriage and occupying land respectively. Sources say that the present drive was triggered by the news of two people – one named Ubaid and another named Jitender Saini – allegedly abducting a Hindu minor girl. The incident led to tensions that have pervaded the Purola district since May 26. However, there are videos from before the alleged abduction showing Hindutva leaders calling for action against, “Love jihadi wolves who come in the forms of carpenters, mechanics, masons, electricians and plumbers.” As per reports in the local press, some of the homes and shops belonging to the minority community were marked wit...

Urgent call for judicial intervention as hate crimes target Muslims in Uttarakhand

Amidst a surging wave of hate crimes targeting Muslims in Uttarakhand, two prominent public intellectuals, mahapanchayat organised by Hindu organisations in Uttarkashi district, were placed in front of Muslim properties in several towns. These threats have already instigated panic-driven migration. Mohammad Zahid, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)‘s minority cell in Uttarkashi district, has reportedly fled the district, along with other Muslim traders who have closed their shops. In response to the June 15 event, Muslim religious leaders in Dehradun have also called for a mahapanchayat on June 18 to protest the ongoing persecution of their community. The communal tensions in Uttarkashi’s Purola town escalated when two men, Ubed Khan, a local shopkeeper, and Jitender Saini, a motorcycle mechanic, both in their early twenties, allegedly attempted to abduct a Hindu girl on May 26. The accused individuals, one of whom is Muslim, were apprehended on May 27. However, two days later, a protest rally in Purola turned violent when protesters hurled stones at Muslim properties. Demonstrations against the attempted abduction were also held in other towns. “Prevent the mahapanchayat” In their joint letter, Apoorvanand, a professor and political commentator, and Vajpeyi, eminent poet and literary critic, emphasise the urgent need for judicial intervention to safeguard the lives, well-being, and assets of those under attack, particularly in light of the scheduled mahapan...
