Cyclone Biparjoy: Red Alert For Gujarat on Thursday; 12 NDRF Teams on Ground, Another 15 on Standby

The very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm" and is likely to make landfall near Mandvi-Jakhau Port along the Saurashtra-Kutch coasts. In view of the impending landfall and the storm, Gujarat has been placed on high alert. On June 14, IMD has declared an orange alert for all districts, while on June 15 a red alert has been issued across the state. On Thursday, the cyclone is expected to be the strongest, and this would lead to extremely heavy rainfall in coastal areas of Gujarat, IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. The rainfall will especially hit on the coastal areas of Gujarat. This could lead to inundation of coastal and low-lying areas. As the cyclonic will give way to very gusty winds, some damage to tin houses, electrical lines could be seen. Meanwhile, Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to review the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy today, while authorities have started evacuating people in districts by the sea in view of the cyclone. The landfall is predicted on the evening of June 14. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane and an orange alert for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts of Gujarat. Biparjoy is the first storm brewing in the Arabian Sea this year. Currently over the east-central Arabian Sea, the cyclone moved northwards with a speed of 7 kmph in the last six hours, the weather office said in its daily cyclone advisory. Sunil Kamble, scientist and head of IMD, Mumbai and Regional Meteorological Centre (Western India), said Cyclone Biparjoy is currently about 500-600 kilometres away from Mumbai. "There is no direct impact on Mumbai because of the cyclone. The pre-monsoon showers and increased wind speed are a result of the cyclone effects," he said. This situation unfolded following a weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several states and Union Territories, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Lakshadweep, among others. To tackle the adverse weather conditions, fishing activities in Gujarat have been halted until June 16. Ports have been closed, and ships are secured due to the rough sea and inclement weather associated with an approaching cyclone.
