According to DGP (Administration) MK Tiwari, Harmanpreet had produced the graduation degree conferred on her purportedly by the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. When the commandant of the Punjab Armed Police in Jalandhar sent the degree for verification, the Meerut university replied that this registration number does not exist. Capt Amarinder Singh had offered the post of DSP to Harmanpreet after her stupendous performance in the 2017 World Cup, one where her crowning glory was the 171 not out that in the semi-final to derail Australia. However, at that point Kaur was serving a five-year bond with Western Railways. Though Kaur had resigned in 2017, she had to pay back five years salary if she left the job before completion of the term.

Harmanpreet had quit her Western Railway job after Punjab government offered her the DSP post. During the time of joining, the cricketer had submitted a 2011 graduation certificate from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. However, as the reports suggest, the police were informed by the university that the roll number on Harmanpreet's certificate does not match their records. “The state government has written to Harmanpreet that since now her qualification can only be treated as Class XII, she can at best be retained by the Punjab police as a constable," a senior government functionary in Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s office told TOI. A Class I level posting can be offered only to those sportspersons who are graduate. The Punjab police, though, has decided against a legal action as Harmanpreet is one of the best women cricketers in the world and if an FIR is filed against her, she might have to lose out on various government benefits and even the Arjuna Award. “She is a player of international repute and was given DSP rank on the basis of her achievements in the field of cricket," the government official added.

Indian women's Twenty20 cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to join Punjab Police as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on 1 March. This became possible after Indian Railways relieved Harmanpreet, following her request to join Punjab Police. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had also taken up the matter with the Railway Ministry to waive off the bond condition and allow Harmanpreet, who is a native of Moga, to join as DSP in Punjab. A spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said the Railways had sent a letter to the government conveying their acceptance of Amarinder's request for bond waiver to enable the cricketer to realise her dream of becoming a police officer. Notably, as per the bond signed with Indian Railways, the cricketer could not be relieved till the completion of a five-year term. Otherwise, she would have to return the salary of five years.
