This month is when Nagula Chavithi, one of the most important ceremonies in Andhra Pradesh for snakes, is held. During Kartik Month, people do special rituals and fast on Mondays. Chaturmas is a period consisting of four Hindu months deemed best for spiritual awakening, observing fast, performing penance and connecting with the inner self. Chaturmas Maas (as the name suggests - Chatur means four and Maas means month) spans over four months. Though it commences on the Ekadashi Tithi (eleventh day), Ashadha, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon), it primarily includes Shravan, Bhadrapad Ashwin and Kartik months. But why is Chaturmas so significant? Scroll down to know the Lord Vishnu (hailed as Palanhar, who protects the Universe) goes into a deep state of meditation (Yoga Nidra) for four months.
