The portals of the Kedarnath Dham opened on April 25 amid rain and snowfall and similarly, the portals of the Badrinath Dham opened on April 27. Prior to the opening of the Kedarnath Temple, Additional Commissioner (Administration) of Garhwal Division and Additional Chief Executive Officer of Chardham Yatra Administration Organisation Narendra Singh Kaviriyal said, “In view of the bad weather and heavy snowfall, the registration of pilgrims for the Kedarnath Yatra has been suspended till April 30 in Rishikesh and Haridwar.” However, with improvements in the weather conditions, the registrations were resumed and the Yatra was started. The Char Dham Yatra began on April 22 on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya. The holy shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri were opened for pilgrims on April 22 and the Badrinath Dham opened on April 27. More than 17 Lakh people have registered this year for the Char Dham Yatra. People have been asked by the government to keep a check on the weather forecast and also carry enough warm clothes. Pilgrims might have to face problems due to the bad weather, however, adequate arrangements have been made for the pilgrims all along the way.

Situated on an elevation of over 3,584 metres above sea level, Kedarnath Dham is one of the holiest Shiva pilgrimage spots in India. Officials had asked pilgrims to take necessary precautions. “Due to the breaking of the glacier again at Bhairav Glacier at 2:25 pm, the Yatra route has been completely closed for movement,” an official said.
