'Additional reservation for transgenders seems difficult', says Maharashtra govt

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday informed the Transgenders persons.(HT File) Advocate General Birendra Saraf told a division bench of acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Sandeep Marne that creating additional reservations for transgender persons would breach the 50 per cent ceiling on reservations set by the Supreme Court. "Considering the extent of vertical and horizontal reservations, which are already provided, providing additional reservations for transgender persons seems difficult," Saraf said. READ | The court was hearing a petition filed by one Vinayak Kashid, a transgender who is a graduate in Electrical Engineering and post graduate in Technology (Electrical Power System Engineering), seeking modification to the advertisement issued by MahaTransco in May this year for mass recruitment to include transgenders. Kashid's lawyer Kranti LC had earlier informed the court that 1 per cent reservation was provided for transgenders in all caste categories in Karnataka, and prayed that such reservation policy be adopted in Maharashtra as well. The bench adjourned hearing in the plea so that the state government's expert committee (set up on the issue) consider the aspect of reservation first. The state government had in March this year issued a government resolution (GR) for recruitment of transgenders in employment and education. The GR stated that an expert committee would be set up under the social justice department comprising 14 members. The 14 members w...

Advance possession letter issued for 30

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday submitted before the Bombay high court that a letter has been issued by the suburban collectorate of ‘advance possession’ of 12 hectare—over 30 acres—land for a new high court complex in Bandra East. The nod was given for advance possession of the land to the HC on an ‘as is, where is‘ basis with several conditions, said the letter. After the state, through its advocate general Biren Saraf, said there was progress and things were moving, the HC said, however, to “monitor the progress’’ the matter was being posted on August 9. The HC bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Sandeep Marne took the letter written by the tehsildar (Revenue), Mumbai suburban, to the HC registrar, informing of the approval granted for advance possession of the Bandra plot, to put on record. The HC was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ahmad Abdi through advocate Eknath Dhokale who wanted the HC infrastructure to be shifted to a new larger location and planned in a comprehensive manner. Last month, the state, through its revenue department, authorised transfer of over 30 acres of land in Bandra East to the Bombay HC for a new high court complex, central government tribunal and lawyers chambers. The public interest litigation was filed by Abdi in 2012 for transfer of the HC to new building and new premises citing inadequacy of space at the present heritage court precinct to accommodate all courts. The HC passed several orders to the ...

Opposition's Sharp Attack On Maharashtra Government As Pilgrims Lathicharged

Mumbai: Warkari devotees on way to a temple in Pandharpur were allegedly lathicharged by the Maharashtra police in Pune district on Sunday. This is the first time Warkaris -- devotees of the Lord Vithoba, a form of Lord Krishna -- have been subjected to police action in the state. Sources indicated that the devotees had got into an argument with the police during the procession. The altercation took place during entry into the Shree Kshetra temple of Alandi town -- 22 km from Pune city -- for a ceremony. Police sources said they had resorted to mild lathicharge to control the overwhelming number of devotees. The rules to allow only 75 members to enter the premises but instead, around 400 people were trying to forcibly enter the temple. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis denied allegations of lathicharge and called it a "minor scuffle". "There was no lathicharge on the Warkari community," Mr Fadnavis told reporters in Nagpur. "We learned from the last year's stampede-like situation at the same place (Alandi) and tried giving fewer entry passes to various groups. It was decided to issue 75 passes to each group that participate in the pilgrimage," Mr Fadnavis, who handles the Home portfolio, was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India. He said around 500 people insisted that they would participate in the pilgrimage and won't follow the decision on the restricted allotment of the entry pass. "They broke the barricades and the police tried to stop them, during...
