The clever and capable MG 1100 Sport Sedan of the Sixties was MG’s maxed

Americans associated the MG name with sports cars because this was the marque that popularized the genre in the early postwar era. While the MG octagon had graced numerous four-doors since the company’s founding, the MG-as-family-car hadn’t caught on in the United States, though small numbers of charming Y- and Z-series saloons were imported alongside desirable T-series and MGA roadsters. MG tried again in the 1960s with the innovative new 1100 Sport Sedan, a model with real enthusiast credentials fitting of the marque. The 1100 was one of the BMC’s better attempts at badge engineering, because the basic product was uniquely appealing. It was a development of ADO16, short for Austin Design Office project number 16. This was a compact five-seat, two- or four-door sedan, or two-door wagon, that would ultimately be sold in Morris, Austin, MG, Riley, Wolseley, Vanden Plas, Innocenti, and other guises. It was conceived as a more commodious (and more importantly, profitable) take on the Mini, and was similarly designed by Alec Issigonis, with clever fluid suspension design by Alex Moulton. Like that Mini, this new model fit a long wheelbase within its compact 146.75-inch overall length by pushing the wheels to the corners. It further enhanced cabin space by mounting the four-cylinder engine transversely, driving 12-inch front wheels. That aforementioned suspension, produced by Dunlop for BMC, was dubbed “Hydrolastic,” and featured water/alcohol-filled rubber cones at each wheel ...

MG4 EV 2022 Review: Game Changing Electric Car Value

The MG4 EV drops the price of a decent compact EV to a bold new level. MG Motor If any vehicle type was going to lead the charge in value it would be a compact, and the MG4 EV ticks a lot of boxes to be a classic of the genre. This is the first MG to be built on a dedicated electric-only architecture. Called the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), this architecture will underpin new releases from MG going forward. It’s a proper “skateboard” system, with the batteries flat under the floor and a long wheelbase to maximize interior space as well as providing balance and a low center of gravity. MG4 EV versions, driving experience and range The MSP architecture also allows for multiple battery and motor configurations. The initial versions of the MG4 EV to arrive include the SE Standard Range, with a 51kWh battery and 125kW (168hp) motor, or there are SE and Trophy Long Range versions with a 64kWh battery and 150kW (201hp) motor. Both are rear-wheel-drive and boast a 50:50 weight distribution, making them great fun to drive. They’re not that fast by EV standards – 7.7 seconds to 62mph for the Standard Range and 7.9 seconds for the Long Range – but handling is great and EV torque means you can perform overtaking maneuvers quite easily. The two battery sizes offer decent amounts of range. The Standard Range goes up to 218 miles (WLTP rating – EPA not announced yet), while the SE Long Range can manage a very healthy 281 miles. The Trophy version drops this to 270 miles. Interestingl...

MG Motor UK MG4 Review 2023

Remember we said the Is this just a re-skin of something old? Not a bit of it. The MG4 is based on SAIC’s (the Chinese parent company) MSP (Modular Scalable Platform), which requires the use of lots of sets of brackets (in an article). It’s a bit like VW Group’s MEB platform, where you can spin different kinds of cars and vans off the same basic skateboard. Different battery sizes, dual motors; it’s all possible. So what are the options? Easy. There are only three models at launch, so it’s not a hugely complicated proposition. There’s a Standard Range base SE with a 50.8kWh battery and 218 miles of range (168bhp, 184lb ft) that currently weighs in at the headline £26,995. Then two big battery versions: SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range. An extra £2,470 for the SE Long Range brings you the 61.7kWh battery and 281 miles of WLTP range, plus 201bhp and the same torque figure. But the Long Range is a smidge slower to 62mph (7.7 seconds plays 7.9) because of battery weight, even though it’s got a tiny bit more power. That all sounds grand, but the weak spot is surely charging. Right? Nope. All cars get 7kW AC charging (which is only ok), but the Standard Range SE comes with 117kW DC (which is good for a smaller-batteried car) with the longer-range versions coming equipped with 135kW DC. That’s likely just over half an hour for a 10-80 per cent charge on a big enough public rapid charger, well up with the competition. You’ll have to try harder. There must be something wrong wit...
