The Unit-2 of Narora Atomic Power Station has completed two years of safe and continuous operation, according to India’s state-owned nuclear power producer. The plant has completed 731 days of operation, officials of the Mumbai-headquartered Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), that runs the plant, said on Tuesday. The NAPS-Unit 2 located in Bulandshahar district in Uttar Pradesh, has become the fourth plant of the NPCIL to complete two years of continuous operations – the others being 962 days by Kaiga Atomic Power Station-Unit 1 (Uttar Kannada in Karnataka), 777 days by Rajasthan Atomic Power Station-Unit 3 and 765 days by Rajasthan Atomic Power Station-Unit 5 (both in Rawatbhata in Rajasthan). NPCIL officials said that NAPS-Unit 2, a 220 MW indigenous pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) commenced its commercial operation on 1 July 1992.“Indian nuclear power stations have demonstrated continuous operation for long periods exceeding a year 34 times so far. The KGS-Unit 1 has set the world record of 962 days of continuous operation,” the officials said.

India Eyes Major Expansion of Nuclear Power

India’s government is pushing for construction of more nuclear power plants as the country looks to increase its supply of cleaner energy. Officials have made some ambitious pronouncements, calling for as many as 20 new nuclear power facilities to be brought online over the next decade, more than doubling the number of operating nuclear power plants in the country. Officials in February announced that Haryana state in northern India will be home to a 1,400-MW facility already under construction near Gorakhpur village, about 90 miles northwest of New Delhi. That plant will feature two 700-MW pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWR) of Indian design. The U.S. and India in 2019 signed a deal in which the 1. India’s Narora Atomic Power Station features two of the 22 operating nuclear reactors in the country, which has about 6.8 GW of installed nuclear power capacity. The Narora station has 440 MW of generation capacity. Courtesy: Government of India Jitendra Singh, India’s Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy, said the agency is working with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime on the installation of nuclear power plants in new areas. Most of India’s operating reactors are located in the southern and western parts of the country (Figure 1). Singh earlier this year said the government is seeking investment from companies in the public sector to help advance India’s nuclear power and other energy goals. Modi’s government has talked about a goal of having 500 GW of energy fr...

Narora joins select club of Indian nuclear power plants with two years of continuous operation

The second 220 MW unit at the Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS) in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday completed 731 days of continuous safe operation, India’s atomic power plant operator NPCIL said on Tuesday. The second unit at NAPS has become the fourth Indian reactor to achieve this milestone after Kaiga Generating Station Unit 1 (962 days), Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) Unit 3 (777 days) and Unit 5 (765 days), the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) said. The 220 MW unit at NAPS was an indigenous, pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) which commenced operation on July 1, 1992. According to NPCIL, Indian reactors have demonstrated continuous operation exceeding a year for 34 times so far. The nuclear power company operates 22 reactors with a total capacity of 6,780 MW. Recently India’s own and first 700 MW PHWR at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat achieved its first criticality or controlled self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction. Seven more reactors with a total capacity of 5,500 MW are under construction and work has been initiated on 12 more reactors with a capacity of 9,000 MW for which administrative sanction and financial sanction has been approved by the Central government.

Narora Atomic Power plant News and Updates from The Economic Times

Ukraine's nuclear energy agency says it has put the last operating reactor at Europe's largest nuclear power plant into a "cold shutdown" - a safety precaution amid catastrophic flooding from the collapse of a nearby dam as Russia's war on Ukraine drags on through its 16th month. 10 Jun, 2023, 05:07 PM IST Moscow says clashes have intensified since Thursday in the Zaporizhzhia region, particularly around the small town of Orikhiv and towards the larger city of Tokmak, around 40 kilometres (25 miles) to the south in Russian-occupied territory. A Ukrainian military success in the Zaporizhzhia region would enable its forces to break through the land bridge that connects Russia with the Crimean peninsula it annexed from Ukraine. This would be a major reverse for Moscow. 09 Jun, 2023, 06:47 PM IST Authorities and rescue workers on both sides stepped up efforts on Wednesday to pull beleaguered residents to higher and drier ground a day after torrential flooding from the dam breach inundated their homes, villages and cities. The Russia-appointed mayor of the occupied city of Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, said seven people were missing. The city sits near the dam. 07 Jun, 2023, 02:43 PM IST The potentially far-reaching environmental and social consequences of the disaster quickly became clear as homes, streets and businesses flooded downstream and emergency crews began evacuations; officials raced to check cooling systems at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant; and authoritie...
