About — The Newton School

Many of our students struggle in a traditional school environment. They may have difficulty sitting still for long periods, paying attention in a large group or finding productive things to do in less structured periods. They may have trouble making or keeping friends, can become anxious in new situations, or can be easily overwhelmed. Our students thrive in a nurturing, flexible environment where they are accepted as themselves and have the opportunity to grow and flourish. The Newton School offers offers: • Small class sizes - Typically 8 students per class with two teachers in the Lower School and 6-8 students per class with one teacher in the Middle School • A program that integrates movement into the curriculum with 18,000 square feet of gym space in the school which helps children to stay engaged in learning and motivated throughout the day • A strong emphasis on social development through everyday interaction with a well trained staff • Daily communication with parents “When a child enters the school for the first time and makes great progress in multiple areas over months and years, it takes pressure off of the parents knowing that the child is in a good place and is safe. While we love our children to learn and know more, the quality of learning and retaining what they have learned is key.The main things for our family are tailored teaching methods, support for learning, promoting independence, transparency, open door policy and encouraging skills development outs...

Newton school district to become first in the nation displaying braille flag – The Kansan

By Chad Frey Newton Kansan Thanks to the work of Newton Lions Club and Randolph Cabral of the Kansas Braille Transcription Institute, Newton USD 373 is about to make history. The district will be the first in the nation to display Braille U.S. Flags designed by Cabral in all of the district schools. There will be eight flags, representing a donation of more than $560 to the school system. “Because of this, this kind of opens the door and allows us to go to KSDE and request that the flag be placed in every school district in the state,” Cabral said. “It is a tremendous pleasure to be here and do this.” He presented to the Newton USD 373 Board of Education, along with the Newton Lions Club, on June 12. “To know that Newton is the first school district in the country to get that, that is a really big deal,” said board member Andy Ortiz. “I hope we can really wrap our heads around how important it is to have that honor bestowed on us.” Ortiz said. “… I was just super inspired tonight.” The flags which will be mounted were designed by “Cabral for his father, a veteran of WWII who lost his sight. “I created this flag for my father, he was a blinded WWII veteran who could no longer see and appreciate the flag,” Cabral said. “Initially I founded the institute in my father’s memory, knowing how much he appreciated the American flag. It helped me realize how many blind Americans there are, not just war blinded, or service connected.” He put together a flag that displays the pledge o...
