Nitish Kumar to expand cabinet on June 16

A day after the Three-time MLA from Sonbarsa in Saharsa district, Mr. Sada is likely to get the portfolio of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Welfare department which was being held by Mr. Suman. Sources confirmed that on Tuesday Mr. Sada received a call from Chief Minister Office (CMO) and Mr. Kumar spoke to him and asked to be in Patna. Mr. Sada who was in his constituency rushed to Patna last night. However, he did not say anything when the media asked him about his name being considered for a post of a cabinet minister. Mr. Sada belongs to the Musahar (rat eaters) community; even Mr. Suman was from the same community. He is an MLA from Sonbarsa for three consecutive terms and is said to be in the good books of Mr. Kumar which has helped him to be the front runner in the cabinet expansion. His journey from being a rickshaw puller to now an MLA and now likely to be a minister has made him special. His simple nature and good oratory skills led him to achieve this position apart from hard work. Mr. Sada started his political journey in the year 1987 and always worked for the upliftment of the Dalits. Presently he is the State President of JD(U) Maha Dalit Cell. In 2010, Ratnesh Sada became MLA for the first time on JD(U) ticket. On Tuesday Mr. Suman resigned from the cabinet citing the reason that continuous pressure was being built to merge Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) in JD(U) so instead of merging the party, he thought of resigning. Meanwhile On the other hand, f...

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Wednesday that the 2024 Lok Sabha election may happen before schedule. He said this during a programme of the rural works department in which he laid the foundation stone and inaugurated 5,061 projects worth ₹6,680.67 crore via video conferencing. While instructing the officials to complete the work, Mr. Kumar said, “You people are claiming to complete the work by January 2024, but I will urge you to complete before that. The sooner it happens the better, because who knows when the elections will be held? Is it necessary that elections will be held next year itself? Who knows if elections would be held before time? So, act fast.” The programme was held at 1, Aney Marg, the official residence of the Chief Minister in which Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was also present. Earlier, Mr. Kumar said that he had worked in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government and he started the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana across the country. Without taking the name of the BJP, Mr. Kumar said, “At the time of Atal ji, 100% fund was allotted by the Central government but the present government has divided in 60 and 40 ratios. Meaning, 60% will be received from the Centre and 40% will be given by the State government. However, If the facts are seen, then the expenditure has become 50-50.” At the end of the programme, Mr. Kumar made a sarcastic remark that the Chief Secretary Aamir Subhani did not mention his name in his address but he (Mr. Kuma...

Bihar political key points: Nitish Kumar takes oath as Bihar CM for 8th time in 22 years

Nitish Kumar dials Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, expresses gratitude: Congress sources PATNA: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who first resigned and then staked claim to form the government again with new allies, called up Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to express gratitude for their support. "Nitish Kumar has called Congress interim President Tejashwi Yadav: Born with a silver spoon, earning his spurs Before CM Nitish Kumar decided to pick him as his deputy for a second time, Tejashwi Yadav was making waves as a doughty leader of the opposition, taking on the government of his father's arch-rival on the floor of the assembly while in session, as well as on the streets. Nitish took oath as the chief minister for the first time on March 3, 2000 despite falling short of a majority, and remained the CM for seven days. Since neither the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) nor the National Democratic Alliance could cross the halfway mark in the Assembly, Nitish resigned on March 10, 2000 even before the vote of confidence could take place in the Assembly. Nitish wanted to become vice president, got angry when BJP refused: Sushil Modi Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi alleged that Nitish Kumar wanted to become the vice president and he dumped the BJP after the party failed to accommodate his ambitions. The former deputy CM's charge was rebutted by Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan, national president of Kumar's JD(U), who also mocked Modi as a leader...

Nitish Kumar's 2024 "One

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent support for the Congress after months of fierce attacks was spurred by a meeting with her Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar, a senior leader of his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) party has said. KC Tyagi has told NDTV that it was Mr Kumar who pitched the "One-On-One" strategy to Ms Banerjee which she later espoused, saying that strong regional parties should be left alone to take on the BJP in 2024 on their home turfs and in turn, they would back the Congress in the 200-odd seats where the two national parties are in direct contest. "Mamata Banerjee has given up the intention of forming a non-Congress third front before the 2024 elections. She said this in her meeting with Nitish Kumar. When Nitish Kumar met Mamata Banerjee, she appeared positive about forming a united opposition front," he said. "Earlier, her opinion was different. She wanted to form a non-Congress third front. Now she agrees with Nitish Kumar's formula that opposition parties should pitch 'one-against-one' candidates against the BJP," Mr Tyagi said. "Mamata Banerjee had said that a meeting of opposition leaders should be called in Patna. Bihar was a symbol of change in the centre when JP's (Jayaprakash Narayan) movement started. Mamata Banerjee's idea of forming a non-Congress third front regarding KCR and Arvind Kejriwal has changed," he said. "Nitish Kumar's formula of opposition unity, in which we propose to field one candidate against a BJP candid...

Jitan Manjhi's Son Quits Nitish Kumar's Cabinet Over Pressure To Merge

Patna: In a sudden move, Bihar minister Santosh Suman resigned from the state cabinet today alleging "pressure" to merge his Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U). Mr Suman, who held the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes welfare portfolio, is the national president of HAM founded by his father Jitan Ram Manjhi, a former chief minister. "I have sent my resignation to the chief minister and personally met Vijay Kumar Chaudhary (senior JD(U) leader and minister) to explain my point. I hope my resignation will be accepted. We are, though, not pulling out of the Mahagathbandhan," Mr Suman told reporters. He pointed out that his father, who then headed the party, had decided to quit the NDA last year and join the Mahagathbandhan because of his loyalty towards the chief minister. "It is for the Chief Minister to decide whether we be kept in the Mahagathbandhan or expelled. We will decide accordingly. But in view of the JD(U)'s proposal, I had to take a decision to save my party from extinction. Hence I resigned," said Mr Suman. The opposition BJP in the state was quick to claim that the development was a dampener for Nitish Kumar's opposition unity efforts as part of which he will be hosting a conclave next week, to be attended by bigwigs like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal. "The resignation of Jitan Ram Manjhi's son is proof of the chasm that exists in the Mahagathbandhan. The alliance has been rejected by the people and it ...

Express News Service PATNA: After walking out of the NDA, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday met Governor Phagu Chauhan and staked his claim to form a government with the RJD-led grand alliance (GA). Nitish’s move ignited a rally of charges and counter-allegations between the now-separated allies. Talking to the media soon after meeting the governor, Nitish said, “We have the support of 165 MLAs. All of them have signed the letter of support.” Now, the governor will decide when the new government will be formed, he added. Referring to his decision to snap ties with the BJP, Nitish said, “I was silent but party leaders started saying that we should not continue with the NDA. I accepted their demand.” Nitish said he was reluctant to become the chief minister after the last Assembly election held in 2020 but BJP insisted on it. “The atmosphere, however, started getting vitiated. But now people of the state do not need to worry,” he remarked. ALSO READ | When asked about the talks of his ambition to become the prime minister, Nitish said, “There is no meaning in it. I will continue to serve the people of Bihar with the support of my seven allies. We will work for the development of the state.” RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said after JD-U’s withdrawal from the NDA, the BJP would not have any ally left in the country’s Hindi heartland. “BJP always finishes its allies,” Tejashwi remarked, giving instances of Punjab and Maharashtra. Nitish Kumar’s final push: Why he sees himself as glue that binds Opposition

When the JD(U) was relegated to number three position in the 2020 Assembly electionswith 43 seats, behind the RJD’s 75 seats and the BJP’s 74, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said he wouldn’t lead the coalition government and that ally BJP should make someone else the CM. Many saw his statement for what it was – clever political posturing, a signature Nitish Kumar move considering he was well aware of his indispensability in the state. He, of course, went on to be CM for a record seventh term. Barely three years later, as he goes all out to bring as many non-BJP parties as he possibly can under the same roof – the first official meeting of Opposition parties takes place in Patna on June 12 – it’s a different Nitish and the circumstances vastly different. For one, he is now in the Mahagathbandhan camp and, though he has continued to keep his chair – largely through political acumen and some deft manoeuvring – he is well aware that the slide he and his party have witnessed since the high of the 2010 Assembly polls may be largely irreversible. Over the last few months, Nitish has been relentlessly working on building a non-BJP Opposition platform. In a camp with competing pulls and pressures, Nitish has, ahead of the 2024 polls, arguably succeeded in bringing about a semblance of Opposition unity, something that hasn’t happened before the last two Also Read | As he goes about his new task, it’s also a different Nitish at work. He is not the grouchy man that occupies the...
