How the Vice

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college in which the members of both the Houses of Parliament vote for the second highest constitutional office in the country using the proportional representation system and a single transferable vote through a secret ballot. The electoral process for the election of the vice-president consists of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members. Rajya Sabha has a total of 233 elected members and 12 nominated, while the lower house has 543 elected members and 2 nominated. A candidate needs 20 electors as proposers and at least another 20 electors as seconders for his nomination in the Vice President elections. The candidate also has to make a security deposit of Rs15,000. What is eligibility criteria? A candidate needs to be at least 35 years old for the position of Vice President of India. They also must be Indian citizens and fulfill all the requirements for the membership of the Upper House. Candidates holding profit-making position with the government of India or a state government, are not eligible to become a Vice President. How votes are counted? The number of first-choice votes received by each MP is determined. Then, the calculated numbers are added together and divided by two, one is added to the quotient, disregarding any remainder. NEW DELHI: Jagdeep Dhankhar took oath as the 14th Vice-President of India on Thursday. He was administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Dhankhar succeeds M Venkaiah Naidu, whose term ended on Wednesday. Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as India’s vice president, giving the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi control of the South Asian nation’s two highest constitutional posts. Dhankhar, the former Governor of West Bengal state and a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, defeated Margaret Alva, a former federal minister, fielded by the opposition led by the Indian National Congress and a few other regional parties. Dhankhar won by 346 votes, said Utpal Kumar Singh secretary general of the lower house of the parliament and also the returning officer of the poll.
