The West Central Iowa Solid Waste Management Association recently acquired a new baler and conveyor to allow the center to begin recycling more types of plastics. Since the recycling center opened in 1990, Mary Wittry, director of Carroll County Solid Waste Management, said the solid waste commission’s goal has been to reduce the amount of materials going into the landfill. In 2021, Wittry said she applied for a number of grants to be able to offer a fuller recycling program. The commission received a $55,000 grant from the Recycling Partnership, including $45,000 for the baler itself and an additional $10,000 to educate the public on what can be recycled. The Department of Natural Resources also offered a $25,000 grant for the cost of acquiring the baler. “Prior to this baler starting at the end of April, all of those plastics were going to the landfill,” Wittry said. “So now we’re excited to have a program that we can pull them back out of the waste stream.” Previously, the recycling center only had the capacity to recycle types #1 and #2 plastics, which include items like water bottles and milk jugs. With the new baler, the center can now recycle #5 plastics, which tend to store food items. Examples of #5 plastics include yogurt and butter containers with lids, drink cups, food trays and food storage containers. “Once they come into our recycling center, we will sort them,” Wittry said. “We will bale them into a 1,200 to 1,500-pound bale, they’re all compressed together...
