The competition aims to determine the world's top Test cricket team over a two-year cycle, which includes all Test-playing nations.The competition commenced on 1 August 2019 and aligns with the ICC's objective of having one top tournament for each of the three formats of international cricket. The WTC 2021-23 cycle was launched in August 2021 and is accompanied by a new points system, with the ICC having formally announced the complete schedule. The WTC points system assigns points to each team based on the results of their Test matches, with the two teams accumulating the most points qualifying for the WTC final, which is held once every two years. The maiden season of the World Test Championship, in which New Zealand won the series by beating India in the final match.
