United Nations Headquarters (New York City)

Standing on the eastern shore of Manhattan Island, on the banks of New York City’s East River, United Nations Headquarters remains both a symbol of peace and a beacon of hope. To its 18 acres come representatives of the earth’s seven billion people, to discuss and decide issues of peace, justice and economic and social well being. Visit the United Nations - It's your world! This tour was one of the most interesting things we did during our trip to NYC. We arrived an hour early as recommended on the booking website, but were through the security check (across the road) and into the building within 10 minutes - so far too early for our tour - which gave us the time to look around the courtyard and the lobby exhibits. The lobby exhibits gave insight into what the UN does, now and in the past, and also displays the belongings and stories of people directly affected by conflict and disaster around the world, you might need some tissues here. After we had explored this exhibit, we checked in at the tour desk and were given stickers to wear, our tour guide met us at the designated spot and led us around the building, stopping at various places to tell us about the UN and it's purpose. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we were able to enter many of the chambers. After our tour, we had a bite to eat in the small cafe in the basement, the food was all served in recyclable/biodegradable containers with wooden cutlery. The food was reasonably tasty. There was also a gift/books...

The United Nations Headquarters in Long Island's Lake Success

The Although the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan was not completed until October 9, 1952, United Nations employees officially vacated their Long Island headquarters in Lake Success on May 18, 1951. The Security Council conducted day-to-day activities there before joining other bodies of the United Nations, such as the General Assembly, in UN Headquarters at Lake Success. Photo from United Nations archive. Tourists would often visit the headquarters in Lake Success. After taking the E or F train the the 169th Street station in Jamaica, tourists could catch an hourly bus to the Eleanor Roosevelt holding the Declaration of Human Rights at UN Headquarters at Lake Success. Photo from United Nations archive. Nevertheless, on the days when the coveted figures were not present, delegates proceeded with their day-to-day discussions. As important topics, such as the state of independent nations, were discussed, secretaries, machinists, and darkroom technicians respectively conducted communications and performed maintenance on the headquarters. The Security Council was the most prominent United Nations body on the property. UNDP Administrator’s speech to the June 2023 Annual Executive Board Meeting

As prepared for delivery. 1. Mr. President, Excellencies, members of the Executive Board, Observer delegations, colleagues and friends. I am honored to join you today for this annual session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board for 2023. This is our shared opportunity each year to look back and look forward, to assess and reflect together as we continue our common endeavor of meeting multiple challenges in today’s world. 2. However, before I begin, let me take this opportunity to thank both Usha Rao-Monari, our Associate Administrator, and Asako Okai, Director of the Crisis Bureau who will shortly be leaving us, for their unwavering support and commitment during their time at UNDP. 3. The challenges are many—but so are the solutions. In 2022, the first year of UNDP’s current Strategic Plan, 2022-2025, we scaled up our delivery, as reflected in the plan’s four moonshots. We supported developing countries to not just cope but seek better ways to manage uncertainty and improve their progress as a whole. Today I will elaborate: • Operational and programmatic highlights from a year of record delivery • Significant contributions to the moonshots • The challenges we encountered and how we are learning from them • UNDP’s increasing capacity to anticipate and act on issues critical to development, now and into the future UNDP’s record delivery 4. UNDP has an essential role in the development promise, globally and in countries in every region. We used our resources effectively an...
