Varisu Review

This is a film written for an audience that thrives on Vijay's stardom and it satisfies them thoroughly, observes Divya Nair. In the last few years, I have realised one thing: There are few actors, who have the ability to bring audiences of all ages to the theatres. While most people prefer to watch a movie with their friends or dates, a select few walk in with their parents, sometimes even grandparents. I've seen it in Rajinikanth's films. Vijay, sorry Vijay Sir (that's how he is credited in the film) aka Thalapathy is among those rare actors I wouldn't mind watching in a theatre with my family. In many ways, he's similar to Salman Khan. He does masala films with signature dance numbers, spiced with humour, gravity and logic-defying action sequences as well as dialogues that people would love to imitate in real life. Like Bhai, he may even pass borderline unpleasant remarks about his love interest, but he'd rarely kiss his girl on screen. And this little detail spares some of our conservative Indian parents from an embarrassing moment. If you sample any Thalapathy film, the lack of logic, story or predictability of events doesn't even seem to matter because Vijay Sir will always round it up with a social message, happily lapped up by innocent fans who can be charmed with lazy dialogues. Question is, does all of this Vijay's magic work in Varisu (meaning 'heir' in Tamil)? Varisu is Director Vamshi Paidipally's second Tamil film after the mildly successful Thozha (remake of...

‘Varisu’ movie review: Vijay returns to his throwback ‘90s self in this familiar emotional entertainer

We’ve seen numerous ‘ amma sentiment’ films in Tamil cinema. And some ‘ appa sentiment' ones too. Varisu, Vijay’s latest outing at the box office, not only puts together these two aspects that Tamil cinema has milked for many years, but also adds another dimension: sentiment among brothers. With so much material about a family that has myriad problems between its members, Varisu resembles the popcorn tub that has seen many rounds of flavoured seasonings. Bland popcorn in the movies isn’t exciting anymore, and that seems to be the case with on-screen proceedings as well. Vijay has certainly experimented with genres in his last few films – Bigil was a sports drama, and Beast was about people stuck inside a mall – but this time, with Varisu, he goes back to a formula that has worked well for him in the past: family. Remember Vijay’s family in Minsara Kanna (1999), a group of rich people masquerading to be poor to unite two people? In Varisu, they are rich – and very rich at that. The house they live in, which we see a few minutes into the film, is among the most lavish residences you’d have ever seen in Tamil cinema. The characters inside talk business and deal in crores, chief among them being Rajendaran (Sarath Kumar) whose business rival is Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). Rajendaran proudly flaunts his two sons – played by Srikanth and Shaam – but is reticent about talking about Vijay, his youngest son. Why’s that? Will Vijay agree to ditch his carefree life – the first time we...

Vamshi Paidipally: We fulfilled the purpose of Varisu

Exactly a week after Varisu hit the screens, Vamshi Paidipally is a relieved man. “I have gone on the biggest rollercoaster ride in the world,” he says with a hearty laugh, adding that he couldn’t be happier with the response at the box office. “Right from the start, we have maintained that it is a straight Tamil film, and [Dil] Raju garu just told me that the film’s Telugu version, Vaarasudu, collected nearly 11 crores in the first four days. In comparison, Vijay sir’s biggest hit, Master, made around 14 crores in Telugu, and we are going to beat that record in no time. However, the biggest surprise for Vaarasudu is how despite the limited promotions due to crunched timelines, positive word-of-mouth helped us market the film. However, I can say that the purpose with which we set out to make Varisu has been fulfilled.” While the filmmaker admits that Varisu might have a lavish canvas, it’s the innate emotion at the core of the film that sealed its success across regions. He believes it is this emotion that eased his process of adapting and understanding the sensibilities of Tamil viewers. “I think everyone, regardless of their language and culture, reacts the same way to a particular emotion. The phenomenal reception of films like Bahubali, RRR, KGF and Pushpa are testaments. Sensibilities vary, but responses to emotions are common,” says Vamshi, who tapped into his previous experience of helming a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, Thozha/Oopiri, to mount Varisu. “ Thozha was concei...

Varisu Movie Review: Thalapathy Vijay’s film is high on comedy and family sentiment

By Latha Srinivasan: This movie has been long awaited by Vijay fans given that it is Pongal treat and a film that is a family entertainer. The fact that Varisu was releasing alongside Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu created a lot more excitement and anticipation. Vijay Rajendran (Vijay) is the youngest of three brothers in the family helmed by Rajendran (Sarathkumar), who is in the business of mining, among others. His other two sons are Srikanth and Shaam, who play Jai and Ajay. The joint family lives together but when Vijay has a disagreement with his father over joining the family business, his father asks him to leave their home. One day, Rajendran finds himself diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and his world is shattered. Vijay comes back home after seven years to celebrate his father’s 65th birthday and this is when things change. Why does Vijay decide to stay back home and why does his father make him the chairman of his group of companies? Vijay choosing to do this family entertainer is not surprising given that he likes to change gears ever so often and, in this film, he has acted, danced and fought his heart out throughout the film. And director Vamshi Padaipally has ensured that the movie is packed with plenty of family sentiment, action, romance and comedy to cater to Vijay fans and the audience. Vijay’s cute guy meets tough businessman characterisation takes some getting used to as we’ve not seen him in such a role play in a long time. The first half of the film has ligh...
