It’s been a dramatic year for the banking industry after the bank run and collapse of seemingly healthy $212 billion (assets) Silicon Valley Bank in March kicked off turmoil in the regional bank sector and spurred a highly competitive deposit environment. Shortly after SVB fell, Switzerland’s Credit Suisse was acquired by competitor UBS Group, adding to uncertainty in the global banking industry. Interest rates and inflation are now at elevated levels, and many banks have failed to manage the abrupt change. Some are sitting on large unrealized losses. The past year’s challenges notwithstanding, banks and other financial firms continue to dominate Forbes Global 2000. In fact, there are more than 300 on the 2023 ranking and American and Chinese banks make up half of the top ten. JPMorgan Chase overtook The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China which has $6.1 trillion in assets and fell to the No.3 spot from No.2 last year. Two other Chinese banks ranked in the top ten: China Construction Bank Corporation ($4.9 trillion in assets) and Agricultural Bank of China Limited ($5.3 trillion in assets). American banks are in good company among 2023’s top 50.
