'Chhello Show' child star Rahul Koli dies of cancer at 17, days before movie release

Rahul, who hails from Hapa town in Gujarat's Jamnagar district, died of leukemia on October 2, nearly four months after he was hospitalised at the cancer hospital in Ahmedabad, his father Ramu Koli said on Tuesday. Rahul has played the role of the friend of the nine-year-old protagonist Samay (Bhavin Rabari) in the Gujarati coming-of-age drama "Chhello Show". The film was nominated as India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards. "Rahul was looking forward to watching the movie on the big screen. He used to say that the release of the movie would launch his future, little knowing that he would die before October 14," Koli, an autorickshaw driver, told PTI over the phone. "He was picked for an audition from a government school at Hapa where he lived with his family," said Lalit Joshi, a Jamnagar-based theatre artist. The movie is inspired by Nalin's own memories of falling in love with movies as a child in rural Gujarat and is set in a remote rural village of Saurashtra. The film portrays the story of a nine-year-old boy and his lifelong love affair with cinema when he bribes his way into a rundown movie palace and spends a summer watching movies from the projection booth. "Chhello Show", which features Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta, had its world premiere as the opening film at the Tribeca Film Festival in June last year.

Rahul Koli Child Actor: Child star of India’s Oscar entry dies days before movie’s release

AHMEDABAD: His first film became his swan song, as Rahul Koli, 15, one of the six child stars of 'Chhello Show' (The Last Film Show), India's official entry to 95th Academy Awards (Oscars), breathed his last on October 2. He succumbed to leukaemia for which he was under treatment for the past four months. His family organized a prayer meet for him at his native Hapa near Jamnagar on Monday. Ramu Koli, his father, got emotional while talking about the last interactions. Rahul Koli first developed low-grade fever which kept coming back despite multiple treatments. He would then be taken to Jamnagar for further treatment and finally to Ahmedabad for hospitalization. "On Sunday, October 2, he had his breakfast and then after repeated bouts of fever in the following hours, Rahul vomited blood thrice and just like that my child was no more. Our family is devastated. But we will watch his 'last film show' together on the release day on October 14 after we perform his final purification rituals," said Koli amid sobs. The autorickshaw driver said that Rahul was the eldest among three siblings. "We are poor, but Rahul's dream meant everything for us. We had to sell our rickshaw for Rahul's treatment, but when the film crew realized they got the rickshaw back for us," he added. Pan Nalin told TOI that it's devastating news for all associated with the movie. "We have been with the family looking after Rahul for weeks but in the end, he could not be saved," he said.
