Why Apple's new mental health feature in iOS 17 and watchOS 10 is really important

You can now log your state of mind With watchOS 10, Apple is adding the ability to log your state of mind to the Mindfulness app on the Apple Watch. Not only will you be able to record what Apple calls a "momentary emotion," but you'll also be able to log your overall daily mood as well. In addition to logging how you're feeling, you'll be able to choose what is contributing to that feeling and describe it. With the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10, users can discreetly and conveniently log their momentary emotions and daily moods. Users can turn the Digital Crown to scroll through engaging, multidimensional shapes to choose how they are feeling, select what is having the biggest impact on them, and describe their feelings. So, what can you do with all of this data? A lot, actually. According to Apple, the company will bring this information into the Health app to try and pull out helpful insights as to what may be contributing to how you are feeling. For example, the Health app might be able to see that there is a connection between feeling pleasant and getting a good night's sleep. In the Health app in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 , users can see valuable insights to identify what might be contributing to their state of mind — whether it’s associations or lifestyle factors, like sleep or exercise. Additionally, depression and anxiety assessments often used in clinics are now easily accessible in the Health app and can help users determine their risk level, connect to resources avai...

New Apple Leak Confirms iPhone 15 Price Shock

Ives has not provided a specific figure, but he is (by far) the biggest name to add weight to these price-hike claims. While U.S. buyers will understandably be concerned about this, potentially the biggest shock will be for international customers who could be facing their second successive major price increase. Editor Despite this, Ives remains bullish on Apple, raising his 12-month stock target to $220 from $205. He believes the iPhone 15 cycle could be a “trophy case” moment for the company, shifting 235 million to 240 million units, after his research revealed approximately 250 million iPhones have not been upgraded in over four years, creating a huge backlog of potential buyers. Whether Apple has done enough with the iPhone 15 lineup to drive this number of sales remains to be seen. While widespread leaks point to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus updating their designs and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models adding faster processors, improved cameras, an ‘Action Button,’ as well as a range-wide transition to USB-C, the overall improvements are modest. Moreover, 06/12 Update: I have been contacted by a trusted source who also expects Apple to increase iPhone 15 prices. While Ives states that the average selling price for next-gen iPhones will be higher, my source claims that in the U.S., this is likely to be via hikes to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max rather than standard models. Unlike earlier leaks, which claimed increases of up to $200, my source claims that a $100 rise...

What Is Apple’s Vision Pro Really For?

Summary. To understand the value of Apple’s new goggles, it’s helpful to think about how virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) correspond to two fundamental tasks in decision making. VR presents new information; AR distills information from an existing environment. But previous headsets and internet-enabled glasses haven’t tapped into the potential for either of these in a decision-making context. Apple is betting that it can build an ecosystem of app developers who can. Apple announced a new computer last week, to great fanfare. The Vision Pro is a computer that is worn on your face, but the novel aspect is how you use it. Rather than view the computer’s output through a physical screen, that output is projected directly into your eyes with two very small but high-resolution displays a very small distance in front of you. Rather than control the computer through a keyboard, mouse, or touch screen, the primary user interface is through eye tracking and gestures. Just as they removed the stylus for screens when they launched the iPhone, Apple requires no physical controller to use the computer. The computer senses what you are interested in interacting with by watching your eye movement and then looks at your hands to determine what you want to do. There have been antecedents to each of these things — a myriad of worn devices for viewing such as the Google Glass or Meta’s Quest Pro and technologies such as Leap Motion and the Myo Armband for gesture control. But n...
